My grandfather was in the 371st USIR, in the same division, and his helmet, which is still in the family, was a very light brown. I have read that all colonial troops and other foreign national units had brown to tan painted helmets.

FYI: Gaddis Gaming is making figures for some named members of the Hellfighters. He also has the Battle Honours range I believe so WWI figures are available. This is all in 28mm though.
