… With 50-Kilowatt Laser Weapons

"The first set of Stryker combat vehicles equipped with 50-kilowatt laser weapons will be delivered to a unit of Army soldiers at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, by the end of September, according to the head of the service's Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office.

The Army has dubbed its Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense system "Guardian." After testing its first prototype last spring at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, against one-, two-, and three-class unmanned aircraft systems and rockets, artillery and mortars, the service is planning to conduct more tests this month, Lt. Gen. L. Neil Thurgood said at a Jan. 12 event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies…"

Finally.

I wonder how quickly it can fire, how many times before it runs out of energy, and how accurate and effective it will be.

Of course, sadly for us gamers, that will all be classified, unless someone decides to post the secret info on-line to keep their latest game rules or videogame for this weapon more accurate.

Are they using coaxial lidar? You can point the lidar at the target, confirm that you're pointing at the target, and shoot.

Speed and agility won't make any difference at ground-to-air or ground-to-orbit distances, because the time between target confirmation and full power contact with target is effectively zero.

The picture shows a beam of red light. That is totally unacceptable. It needs to be blue so the red/green color blind can see it. And it needs to make a "pew-pew" sound when fired. Recruiting should skyrocket when that happens.

Methinks it's going to be used in an anti-drone role…

Direct combat aircraft days are numbered. Heck, this is the literal beginning of the end for missile systems and dogfighting. Nothing outmaneuvers lightspeed weapon delivery. SAL systems and networks will make bombers obsolete unless in a literal cloud of drones.

Dust, dirt, rain, sleet, snow, fog, clouds, humidity, and other atmospheric phenomena are very likely to adversely affect its effectiveness though, I would think.

I can't believe they put it on a Stryker. It belongs on a friggen shark.
