E--don't have it.

However, when I was preparing to take up medieval minis again, I considered it, but the high cost of the rules and the battle-boards for each faction turned me away from it toward Lion Rampant (and maybe back to Pig Wars for some things).

Solid B. Some of the factions' abilities are "gamey" but the battle boards are an innovative way to give different forces distinct flavor without a plethora of special rules you have to look up every turn.

A/ B also.

I agree with Jlundberg's summary.

Fun and bloodshed. If you want historical accuracy that's a different question

V2 rules play a bit better and are better balanced – however has put off a lot of people who already had v1

B. Gives a good game, but with heavy bias towards the game end of the war game spectrum.

C. I have a Norman "army" and the guys I game with have armies for Saga as well. Everyone got excited about it for 2 months, and then we never played again. We played a total of 5 games….. Butterfly gamers are a bigger problem…lol

No opinion as never played.

Prince Alberts Revenge14 Jan 2022 3:39 p.m. PST

B/C but more C I think. I played a few games without prior knowledge of the mechanics or gameplay and completely thrashed my more experienced opponent. That right there set off some red flags because no decent ruleset should let a general as poor as myself win that easily. All joking aside I just felt "meh" when playing it and didn't feel like I was doing anything that felt the period.

khanscom14 Jan 2022 4:30 p.m. PST

B, based on experience with "A Fantastic SAGA"-- a fan- based riff on the historical game. I enjoyed the mechanics of the orders boards.

B- for me. Not bad and one of the first skirmish sized wargame I've played.

D. Lot of work for what it gives in play.

SultanSevy15 Jan 2022 7:45 a.m. PST

A – innovative, gamey, and fun warband-sized battles.

The Tin Dictator15 Jan 2022 9:17 a.m. PST

D. The battle boards and special rules for each faction make it too gamey and creates a lot of arguments. The rules are not as tight as they could be.

Version 1 was GREAT! Version 2, not so much.

HansPeterB17 Jan 2022 10:49 a.m. PST

B: It's a fun game and, as others have said, innovative, but resemblance to history seems largely coincidental. With 2ed., I prefer the fantasy Saga version to the historical.

Martian Root Canal17 Jan 2022 3:51 p.m. PST

A for Dark Ages and other historical supplements.

D for Fantasy. Doesn't work that well as lists are 'philosophies,' not army lists. So Skaven and Dwarves use the same battle boards.

Steamingdave218 Jan 2022 10:36 a.m. PST

But getting Dice is a problem and they are a silly price. It has also been a problem getting some of the rule supplements.
I actually prefer Dan Mersey's games for Dark Ages/early medieval, but nobody I know will play those games.

sidley29 Jan 2022 12:38 p.m. PST

Solid B. But have gone away in favour of Saga Magic the best iteration of the system.

Joe Legan10 Feb 2022 5:24 p.m. PST

B. As people have said it is just plain fun. Don't look to hard for historical accuracy and you will be fine.

A good B, but the SAGA magic version is outstanding.
