All, looking for ideas. I've got great figures of Beowulf and Grendel. Beowulf is a heavily converted Elastolin Viking. Grendel is a terrific Reaper troll. I have long wanted to do a game based on the saga, but can never quite decide the right way to do it. Any thoughts?

Here are the figures – link

Suggestion: make it a mini campaign, with skirmishes loosely following the story. Instead of Victory Points, track Beowulf's reputation.

1. Post guards around camp. Grendel attacks (at night, so limited visibility). The first warrior he kills is expected. Any warriors he kills after that = -1 reputation. ("Why couldn't you save poor Harald?")

2. Look for clues. Have the warriors search camp for clues as to what happened. Roll for spotting Grendel's trail, 1VP if successful. Roll to decide if it was the ancient evil (1VP) or a bear (0VP).

3. Second attack: same as the first but Beowulf can set traps (which might harm Grendel, but won't stop him). Beowulf looses reputation after 3 warriors are killed.

Etc.
Though I'm having trouble coming up with ways for Beowulf to gain reputation. And I was thinking that success in one skirmish would give a bonus to the next (reroll 1 die, Beowulf gets one more warrior, next battle is during the day instead of night, etc.)

Huscarle, do you know what the 5e is that they refer to?

The old Battlegames magazine (issue 4) contained a mini game "Skirmish at Heorot" (including rules) written by Dan Mersey

nnascati, I went in for the KS, mainly to get the figures and some interesting maps/scenarios. According to the blurb, It's designed for duet play – one GM and one player, Beowulf presents a host of new and specially adapted 5e D&D rules to create epic and thematic adventures for your lone hero and his followers. Hopefully the youtube videos should give you more of an idea?

I also went in for this Beowulf KS, but only for the figures, especially Grendel's mother.

I was toying with a concoction of some of the above merged with elements of the TFL Dux Britanniarum wargames rules, but that will be far down the line on my to do list grin
