Many years ago I used to play a fair bit of Ancients in 25/28mm but have not played in several years. The chaps I used to game with lost interest, moved on to other games or in some cases passed away. So for the past few years my large collection of figures have become dust catchers . In fact the last historical game I played was back in 2017, I have spent the past few years looking, seemingly in vain for opponents however, it seems that the scale in London is 15mm and whilst I understand the appeal of 15mm, I have never enjoyed painting 15mm figures .
I am curious if anyone in the capital plays in 28mm ( or 25mm) . The second difficulty I have, is rules. I do not consider myself fussy but I seem unable to find anything I like. Back in the day I played and enjoyed Warhammer Ancients but other than the occasional competition I think the rules are pretty much dead and buried. I tried my hand at Clash of Empires which seemed to be WAB by other means and aside form additional complication it played much like WAB but again, I cannot find anyone who actually plays it. I am happy to try War and Conquest but again I suspect that these failed a momentum
I have also tried DBA and DBM neither of which really floated my boat, then Art de la guerre which likewise failed to excite me, and Field of Glory which was not my thing either. I played Impetus which had the right set of aesthetics and was playable but those rules seem to have died a death. I then tried Hail Caesar but for various reasons that did not hit the spot either. I then tried To the Strongest but that one failed to do it for me. Over on Youtube I watched a video for Sword and spear but the command mechanisms do not seem to convince me. I have also watched a video of Triumph which seems to be another variation on the DBA riff.
I now find myself in a situation which would be regarded as anathema: I have just two historical figures left and without opponants or rules no real inclination to buy more.
In terms of rules, I like units , not elements, I am happy with buckets of dice, attrition, I am happy with units comprised of smaller subdivisions with removal of subdivisons, I am also happy with figure removal and casualty counters. the only thing I cannot abide are games which take 5 hours to play or which which feature long tables of factors – lots of maths hurts my brain.
So the question is , " is there anybody out there, just nod if you can hear me"
