If we could bring back one leader from history to re-unite the United States, who would it be?

15% said "Ronald Reagan"
13% said "Theodore Roosevelt"
11% said "no opinion" OR "this is ridiculous"

Reagan best in my lifetime. Brought back the self respect of "most of us" in the US, after the disaster of the Carter administration. Again just my opinion. I am sure there is someone out there who loved Jimmy. I won't judge on those before my time, I wasn't there.

Hardly much of a consensus there. Besides, the nature of factions in America, there will always be differing opinions.

Yep, certainly one of the very best since George Washington.

I was checking into a hotel in Hvar, Croatia, the day Ronald Reagan died in 2003. I remember it because, as I turned away from the counter, a man came up to me, middle aged and very nice, I would guess Midwestern, and said to me, "I heard you speaking English- are you Americans?"

When I said we are, he said, in the tone of someone breaking difficult news, " I thought you might want to know that Ronald Reagan has died."

I had never seen that before, and sadly, I don't know that anything like it will ever happen again.

I think that poor Jimmy would've been a good president in another, less difficult time. Don't forget that he was elected on Watergate's & Vietnam's wave, simply he wasn't the man needed for that times, and he wasn't surely the only responsable for all the troubles in that terrible decade, for all these disasters we can blame the various past administrations, who choose always the wrong way to handle a crysis, such as supporting corrupt dictators, encouraging military coups and generally discrediting democracy.
