That his staff knows where his subordinate commands are and that their commanders will follow his directions to the best of their ability. Also, that they realize what to do if they are unable to carry out his orders. And one last one, that his subordinate commanders provide valuable and timely upward flow of communication back to him. We wargamers have that 1,000 foot high view and can see everything thus few have rules for the upward flow of communication. 20% of the Command and Control function: Commanding element; Commanded element; downward flow of communication (we do all that pretty well); upward flow of communication (My beef here) and finally Friction at all levels. THAT is command and control for all periods. (Not a command radius.) |

… his fingers and toes in public. That is, along with information you must provide image, to everyone associated with (not just in) the battle. Don't rely on the assumption that everyone thinks you and your plan are as awesome as you think. This is the first challenge of leadership. Everyone may want the same information from you, but the don't want the same image of you. Some people's image of you is only tenuously associated with your actual behaviour and words or facts, for better or worse – both ways are a problem. |
