Which no-longer-published miniature-wargaming magazine is the one you wish was still around?

Schogun24 Dec 2021 6:43 a.m. PST

I can think of two -- Battlegames and Wargames Journal.

I guess I'd say Wargames Journal because the quality of articles and photos was excellent. And an issue had rules for some kind of game, a few I still use to this day.

MWAN, Battlegames, Historical Gamer, Practical Wargamer, Battle for Wargamers, Battlefields. Which is not to say there were not other good magazines, now deceased.

As a hobby, we've been rough on magazines.

The Courier and MAWN, although Tradition is what got me started.

Dagwood24 Dec 2021 1:10 p.m. PST

Miniature Wargaming and Wargames Illustrated. They may still be published, but they ain't the same. I miss the old style. of Duncan McFarlane.

BillyNM24 Dec 2021 1:15 p.m. PST

I'm with Dagwood, it's not the title of the publication that counts but the editor and I sorely miss anything and everything by Duncan MacFarlane.

AFV-G2

Wargamers Digest.

I think Hal is a member here, isn't he?

I heard the guy who published AFV-G2 got into some legal problems over guns? Don't know, just a rumor.

The Wargamers Digest people fell of the face of the earth. Some folks a while back were trying to get the rights to the magazine and to Angriff that they also published. Could not locate them.

I miss Ares magazine from SPI/TSR. Many fun hours playing the included games and articles. Lots of good stuff for Dragon Quest RPG, which was a tactical miniatures game.

Not wargaming per se, or even no longer in print, but I miss White Dwarf back in the day when it covered the whole hobby, not just GW.

Scenarios for Wargamers. I just remembered I have 3 issues.

Nashville +1. TTT was chock full of info (even if some of it wasn't right, though that applied to a lot of magazines). And it had a scenario in every issue, sometimes two!

The old EE+L, MWAN and the Courier.

I know you asked for one but the old EE+L was a great, irreverent, informational magazine with a wicked sense of humor. MWAN was chock full of info – a definite storehouse of ideas for any gamer. The Courier – got me involved in gaming.

I've also got to mention Wargamer's Digest – great little magazine. 'Battle-for Wargamers' was a great magazine in the 1970s.
