The Soldiers of Nestor with DBM.

Good in DBM List # 26 LATER MYCENAEN AND TROJAN WAR 1250 BC – 1190 BC, the Greeks of Nestor are described as follows:

"The elderly and conservative Nestor's Pylians are represented as using the tactic of the earlier period" and are designated as follows:

Pylian sub-general in chariot (Nestor) – Reg Kn (F)
Pylian spearmen – Up to 1/2 Reg Pk (I) rest Reg Pk (x)
Pylian archers – (supporting spearmen) – Reg Ps (O)

That is to say exactly as in the DBM list n ° 18.MINOAN AND EARLY MYCENAEAN 1600 BC -1250BC ???

Spearmen with tower shields or in the form of "8" supported by archers with nobles in dendratic armor?

At the time of the Trojan War?

Paskal,

My guess is that DBM is mirroring the idea that Pylos under Nestor would be fighting in the 'old way', i.e. the way in which Nestor remembers and talks about in the "Iliad".

Frankly, it depends on how you see the Trojan War. Do you want to fight 'historical' battles or 'ahistorical' battles? I would think that historically, Pylos would be militarily the same as the Mycenaeans and other Greek states of the time, i.e. chariot warriors with 'chariot runners'. However, you can make the argument that the "Iliad" (which also contains a lot of early Iron Age content and bits from earlier periods) contains a description of a Mycenaean army consisting of 'chariot runners' fighting against a Trojan 'chariot' army. Drews mentions something along those lines and he might be right – it's very hard to be sure.

If you're gaming in 28mm, the Pylian army can be represented in either the 'old' way or historically – Redoubt, Eureka, Old Glory and Black Tree, as well as others make great minis. If you're gaming in 15mm, Museum makes the 'old' Bronze Age warriors in figure-8 shields and in Dendratic armor. Old Glory 15s makes 'new' Bronze Age minis that are probably more historically accurate for the Trojan War.

Swampking,

I understood that Nestor's infantry was still equipped with tower or "figure-of-eight" shields and especially long spears which is not what the archaeological finds made at Pylos represent.

PS : 28 mm Trojan war figures by Black Tree ?
