As a comedy, on a scale of 1 (lousy) to 10 (incredible).

15th Hussar18 Dec 2021 2:46 a.m. PST

A Good Solid 8, IMHO

HMS Exeter18 Dec 2021 3:03 a.m. PST

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 56%, and I rather agree. It's cute, but it compares weakly vs. Mel Brooks' other master outings.

1 for me, didn't even finish watching it.

Stryderg18 Dec 2021 6:48 a.m. PST

Loved it when I saw it in my younger days. Haven't seen it since. I think it's available on youtube for free.

1 as a comedy (a few moments, too far between)
0 as a movie (plot too contrived to create moments/jokes)
-1 as a parody (very surface, no deeper satire of the genre)
-10 as a Mel Brooks movie (If BA is a 10 …)

Oddball18 Dec 2021 7:51 a.m. PST

3, maybe 4.

HMS Exeter sums it up for me.

I think Mel Brooks got this made because of his past classics of "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles".

Kinda like Quentin Tarantino, his best stuff was his first stuff. Brooks could make lower quality movies based upon his past reputation.

Oddball18 Dec 2021 7:55 a.m. PST

"Never Give Up! Never Surrender!"

Now that's a great movie. Can never look at William Shatner again without thinking of it.

rustymusket18 Dec 2021 8:04 a.m. PST

I would say a 5, but I have not seen it in a long time.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2021 8:11 a.m. PST

One.

pzivh43 Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2021 8:36 a.m. PST

Yeah, a 5. But the scene with William Hurt in the diner is classic. Ludicrous speed!

"A force more powerful than the Schwartz, Merchandizing"

I'd give it a 6. Pretty funny, but not rib cracking hilarious!

dick garrison18 Dec 2021 9:56 a.m. PST

3 out of ten, it ain't "Young Frankenstein" (a 10 in my books) and that's for sure!

Cheers Roger.

Perris070718 Dec 2021 9:58 a.m. PST

6, but it has become a cult classic for many.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2021 10:46 a.m. PST

If memory serves, a 3 or a 4.

dragon6 Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2021 12:12 p.m. PST

meh. It's not History of the World part 1 thank gawd but… not worth it

McWong7318 Dec 2021 12:25 p.m. PST

Not my favourite Brooks film at all, but my young kids loved it.

Chimpy18 Dec 2021 12:49 p.m. PST

Actually it's my favourite Mel Brooks movie. Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet is great – "go to ludicrous speed". But probably worth a 6 overall even though I watch it every few years when I am in a silly mood.

Galaxy Quest is much better as others have said.

troopwo Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2021 1:01 p.m. PST

Solid six.
On par with "History of the World".

"Comb the Desert!"
Thank God for john Candy.

Pizza The Hut was a pretty good take.

JMcCarroll18 Dec 2021 1:33 p.m. PST

Agree a 6. Still "give me paw".

jfleisher18 Dec 2021 2:13 p.m. PST

Ten, maybe 11…

"They've gone plaid…"

Zeelow18 Dec 2021 3:17 p.m. PST

Crazy! 10!

HMS Exeter18 Dec 2021 3:28 p.m. PST

I remember seeing a Patrick Stewart interview where he related he'd gone to see Galaxy Quest by himself at a snoozy matinee and laughed his head off.

As soon as he could, he called Frakes and told him he had to go see this flick.

pvernon Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2021 8:06 p.m. PST

I agree with the "1" votes.

BuckeyeBob18 Dec 2021 8:11 p.m. PST

I give it 8 thumbs up….

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP19 Dec 2021 8:54 a.m. PST

Judged in isolation, Spaceballs is about a 4--typical Mel Brooks, funny if you're 12. But looking at it from The Producers it's so low you can't even get a good look. My entire Mel Brooks DVD collection consists of The Producers.

Agree with--looks like about everyone--on Galaxyquest. No SF comedy to compare with it.

Thresher0119 Dec 2021 8:40 p.m. PST

Never watched it, thankfully.

From the little bit I've seen in ads, and heard about, a 1 rating seems rather generous, so I have no desire to watch it at all.

HMS Exeter19 Dec 2021 8:41 p.m. PST

If you're talking straight scifi comedy it's a thin selection. You've got:

Galaxy Quest

followed by:

Spaceballs

and a long empty space, followed by:

Ice Pirates.

There are other candidates, but they all seem to owe more to other genres than scifi.

A solid 8.5. So many great lines;

They've gone plaid
Oh no, not again!
Spaceballs the flamethrower, the kids love this one
I didn't see you playing with your dolls sir
I see your schwartz is as big as mine
God willing we'll meet again in Spaceballs the Sequel, the Search for more cash

And many, many more
