Interesting, but a little too pat. Even Hornfischer (Ship of Ghosts) was unable to determine the maneuvering that tightly, nor whether De Ruyter was lost to a torpedo or a mine.

Hornfischer's (Rest In Peace) book is fantastic, as all of his are.

rmaker sums it up, good scratch the surface info.

I did like the part about how the US destroyer CO saw that it was a losing fight, took his destroyers away from Doorman (Dutch admiral in command) and made a run for it.

Later his destroyers were the only Allied ships to escape from the waters around Java to continue the fight against the Japanese.

Sometimes, live today, fight tomorrow is the best choice of actions.

The USS Houston Should never have been in this fight. She had major bomb damage and was had lost the uses of 1 of her main gun turrets.

The whole Dutch East Indians campaign was a horrible waste of Ships, Planes and Men. FDR needed another force to laydown a bunt after he abandoned the Philippines.
