I know, it is still perhaps premature to start talking about it but it might be interesting to write about in the following weeks and months what are the rumors, facts and what to expect from such a popular Medieval war gaming rules. So far what we know is: An expanded edition of the Origins Award-nominated Lion Rampant, featuring new rules, scenarios, and sample armies. What else do you know? |

I saw it was available for preorder on Barnes and Noble for July 2022 release. |

I know that I'm happy enough with the current edition so very probably won't buy it again… |

I believe I heard somewhere it was expanding to include the Dark Ages? |

I guess they will include all the additional rules that are "outside" LR today: - Dark ages (WI article) - Crusader states book - Early crusades (Viking in the Sun) |

If that were the case it might swing my opinion |

Additional scenarios are always nice and might be worth a pdf purchase if available. As far as additional army lists, the rules are simple enough that they already lend themselves to many other periods. A few house rules added to reflect the feel of the period make for some fun games. |

The current LR is 64 pages while 2nd ed is 160 pages. I have the other books but it makes sense to gather all rules in one volume. +96 pages sounds promising :) From the booksellers description: An expanded edition of the Origins Award-nominated Lion Rampant, featuring new rules, scenarios, and sample armies. Take to the battlefield as Richard the Lionheart, Joan of Arc or William Wallace – or forge your own legend – with Lion Rampant: Second Edition. From the Dark Ages to the Hundred Years' War, raids, skirmishes, and clashes between small retinues were a crucial part of warfare, and these dramatic small-scale battles are at the heart of this easy-to-learn but tactically rewarding wargame. Lion Rampant: Second Edition is a new, updated version of the hit Osprey Wargames series title, and retains the core gameplay while also incorporating a wealth of new rules and updates from several years' worth of player feedback and development. Whether they are looking to recreate historical encounters or tell their own stories, the varied scenarios, unit types, and sample retinue lists found in this volume provide everything players need to face each other in quick, exciting, and, above all, fun tabletop battles. |

I can't see how LR would be at all suitable for the campaigns of William Wallace. |

What about Dragon Rampant? |
MrZorro | 20 Dec 2021 7:17 a.m. PST |
Well, I guess Dragon Rampant will also have a new edition after LR, makes sense. |

Well, this was published recently. What else you know? Lion Rampant – Second Edition // Osprey Games The Second Edition of the game is going to cover the Dark Ages as well as the Medieval period of the first edition. You'll be able to follow the fortunes of notable characters from history like Joan Of Arc or William Wallace, or perhaps forge your own legends with personalities of your own devising. The game will be as easy to learn as it was before but with options for playing out all manner of raids, skirmishes and clashes with your armies. The game has now benefited from years of player feedback and updates and so that has filtered down into what you get within the Second Edition book. For example, new scenarios have been added and the campaign idea has been expanded. You will also find greater time given over to detailing terrain and optional rules for the various periods of warfare. However, it's still Lion Rampant and if you have a first edition army, it will still be viable! |

You know, my first thought was that tripling the length was a deal-breaker. And while I like Mersey as a rulesmith, the man can't create a scenario. "There should probably be terrain on the board" just doesn't cut it. Current release date is 4 August, Xenos Rampant in November, and neither will be admitted to the Piepenbunker until I see multiple reviews and not publishers' blurbs. |
