Background: for a while there, for about 15 years I went to the same physician for all my needs.

A couple years ago during a scratchbuilding kick I tore my house up looking for a particular book that had line drawings of some of the French Napoleonic invasion craft destined to never carry a French army to England. Eventually I convinced myself that I stupidly sold it during a book purge.

Some time, maybe two years after that I was visiting said Dr. and we were talking about sailing ships and he said "hang on… I have a book you might like". When he came back from his office he had a book that looked familiar and he said "somebody left this in the waiting room about ten years ago. You can have it if you want it." Sure enough, it was my missing book, complete with post-it notes and other markers I had placed in there last time I used it.

Funny story. Thanks for sharing.
I regularly tear my house apart, looking for 'lost' items. Last Wednesday looking for Osprey, Napoleons Hussars, after watching the Duelists, 1977.

What a great story! It reminds me of the time I lost a library book, and when I went to the library to pay for it, the librarian checked the card catalog and found that it had been returned on time, and no fine was due. How it got back to the library I will never know.

Raising the eternal question of how long a book should be lost before you buy the replacement copy--and how soon after you do so the original will resurface.

I bought *Lincoln's Greatest Speech* and took it to my father-in-law's, thinking he would enjoy it as much as I had. It was a loan, and when I asked for it back, only the dust jacket was to be found. I shrugged it off, but I kept the dust jacket.
The book turned up -- in his house -- about five years later. The dust jacket is now back on the book. It looks brand-new.
