So I'm really curious as to how many gamers have made the jump
and bought a 3D printer. Personally I'm on the cusp.
so
A: You have one
B: You are seriously considering it.
C: Eventually if they get easier to handle
D: Never

A:
I actually have two I have a resin printer and a FDM printer of the two I prefer the Resin printer especially for miniatures as it prints finer details, the FDM printer has a bigger build area so is better for terrain

Lascaris01 Dec 2021 11:54 a.m. PST

A. Currently have a Qidi X-Plus. Will be updating with the new Prusa printer.

David Manley01 Dec 2021 12:05 p.m. PST

A – when i started pronting I kept tabs on how much the equivalent models would cost if I'd bought them in white metal or plastic. The machine broke even half way through The second bottle of resin. I'm on my 9th now.

And that includes all costs such as IPA, a replacement LCD screen and other sundries

David Manley01 Dec 2021 12:08 p.m. PST

Can I suggest an addition?

E- yes, and I create my own 3D models

Sam Quee01 Dec 2021 12:09 p.m. PST

I also have two. An Ender 3 FDM and a Mars 2 Pro resin printer.

Prusa MK3S for over a year now. Learn something nearly daily as I use it. Have started working on creating model skills now.

Has anyone successfully printed 1/72 scale miniatures with resin? Very heavily considering resin but the cantankerous nature and the cost is giving me pause. But considering recent price and logistics issues, 3D may be the only route.

Martin Rapier01 Dec 2021 12:59 p.m. PST

Unlikely to ever get one. I've got so much stuff already that I can't imagine scenarios where the print run would be large enough to justify to cost.

Very happy to by 3D printed stuff off other people though.

A. It was a no brainer after seeing all the superb Warmaster stl files out there. Elegoo Saturn for the win.

But it leads to a massive pile of resin shame.

I have 6, with 1 more on the way. I'll probably buy a Prusa next year too, and maybe the Saturn when they upgrade it. I have very little need to purchase traditional miniatures any longer.

Ender 3
Anycubic Photon S
Elegoo Mars

A I got a free Ender 3 when one of my group got a Prusa. I know 4 gamers who are printer FDM or Resin or both.

Will be getting a resin unit this next year I hope.

Augustus- One of them has 2 platoons of British WWII armor in 15mm. Just have to tweak the size of the build and you have 1/72. One of the others prints FDM with HO.

rustymusket01 Dec 2021 6:36 p.m. PST

Unlikely I would get one.

Callsign 2101 Dec 2021 6:47 p.m. PST

A. Ender 3v2. Mostly for terrain pieces. Attempts with figures have been… disappointing.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP01 Dec 2021 6:48 p.m. PST

I currently have 4, I think I have an addiction.

Ender 3v2 and 6
A Form 3 resin (my favorite- and what a lot of miniatures manufactures use for their masters)
A Robox Cel

I used to have a Makerbot Replicator 2, but finally got rid of it and a Form 2, which died and I still have around, but upgraded to the 3.

I've noticed that the local gamers who have bought printers and use them are now more awash in unpainted resin/FDM figures than I am with the metal ones. Also, having recently purchased and painted 10mm Warmaster resin figures, I have become very disillusioned with them due to the fragility and brittleness of the resin that was used. Drop a stand on the floor and kiss it goodbye.

Nick Bowler01 Dec 2021 8:08 p.m. PST

A. Ender 3, Ender 3 Max, and Elegoo Mars 2. I can print faster than I can paint. But a 3D printer is the single best piece of wargames kit I have.

The biggest issue is the lack of files for periods I want. E.g., I cant find Ancient Egyptians. But that is changing very quickly. But for popular periods such as ACW or Napoleonics there is plenty of choice.

What's the word on smell? I hear the good resin and printers need a lot of ventilation IIRC.

Nick Bowler01 Dec 2021 10:26 p.m. PST

What's the word on smell?

I have my resin printer in the garage. I wouldnt put it in the house. (I have decided I am one of the minority who are particularly impacted by the smell).

I thought about selling the resin printer. But you can print a LOT of smaller figures in one run on a resin printer. So every month or so I power the machine up and print a lot of stuff.

I use my FDM machines for terrain, and they are runnining 24x7.

KSmyth01 Dec 2021 10:32 p.m. PST

I have incredible appreciation for those who have them and use them, and especially for those who design for them. But I just don't see myself going down that road. I have lots to keep me busy, and am happy to support those who would print for me.

David Manley02 Dec 2021 2:07 a.m. PST

"I've noticed that the local gamers who have bought printers and use them are now more awash in unpainted resin/FDM figures than I am with the metal ones."

Yes indeed. I'm "fortunate" in that I only have limited time windows in which I can print (I set mine up in a warm environment that is used for other purposes, I get to use it when the building is free) which means I have enforced "down time" when I can paint up the resin pile that has accumulated :)

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP02 Dec 2021 2:16 a.m. PST

I used to print far more often, but now find myself printing only when I have something I really want or need. I was awash in unpainted prints, but now I really pace myself.

I find them particularly useful for making prototype pieces for my own hobby game designs and bases that I whip up. Lately I have been printing up 28mm armor (WWII and Modern) and my slowly growing stack of 1/100 BattleTech Mechs as well as the occasional terrain piece.

I also printed up an entire Star Frontiers UPF and Sathar fleet when I stumbled across the files.

If they were easier to use maybe. I buy a lot of miniatures and terrain on Etsy. Pretty expensive but beautiful stuff. Thay are very very fragile though. If you drop a mini it will break.

Andrew Walters02 Dec 2021 11:19 a.m. PST

Need more choices: FDM, SLA, Both.

I have three FDM printers. Thinking about SLA, but what a mess!

Elegoo Mars 2 Pro (resin). Test print worked perfectly. Then my next few attempts were disasters. I decided to learn how to use it grin and I have since churned out units in 6mm, 10mm, 15mm and 28mm and it's good fun. I have a printing day every 1 or 2 weeks and make enough to keep me busy.

I have had four total, currently have three, and am planning on selling one to buy another.

And I don't have a problem. I can quit anytime.
