When he had finished his 2nd tour in VN he was one of my instructors at Parris Island in 1972. In 2012 I enrolled my son at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX.

He was assigned to Gulf Company. Each company had a retired senior NCO and his wife that lived at the barracks with them to "supervise" 7/24 during the school year. When I visited the MMA campus I was introduced to now Sgt Major Wilson and he's got my son. What a coincidence! I took advantage of this and at times I'd call Wilson and request some special "PT" for my son as "punishment" for making life difficult for my wife and I, I did get my money's worth.

Wilson was my son's "father figure" his junior and senior year in high school and he completely turned his grades around from public school in CA, something I failed to do which is why we sent him to MMA.

Wilson was at Khe Sanh from the first to the last day and on occasion represented the Sgt Major of the Marine Corps at official functions. He was awarded 2x PH. I couldn't thank him enough as he was a role model for my son enlisting in the Marines too.

Rest in peace, Sgt. Major Wilson. Sounds like you both
were lucky to have been trained and mentored by him.
Contrary to popular belief, lots of the Senior Drill
Instructors were father figures even during the Vietnam
War. I still think of my Senior Drill Instructor, Gunnery
Sergeant L.P. Risch. He was 41 when I went through boot
camp. Served in both Korea and Vietnam. Sure wish I
could pay him respect today. Think of him often.

Thanks for the post.
