Just about to start gaming this conflict and looking at the rules available, there appear quite a few! This will be for larger battles rather than skirmishes (still pondering whether to go for 6mm or 28mm).

Gå På
Twilight of the Sun King
Polemos: Great Northern War
Maurice
Might and Reason
Under the Lily Banners
Honours of War
WRG 1685-1845

Any recommendations?

I would consider either Rules of Battle by Neil Graber or In Deo Veritas WSS supplement by Helion (just released) if you are doing small scale. I am trying to find a set and scale myself but will likely go to small scale as I already have extensive collections of 28mm WSS minis and am looking for more of an "epic" look with multibasing. I would also add 10mm Pendraken as they have a nice range although perhaps a bit limited (but gaps can be filled from the LoA or WSS ranges).

We recently refought Poltava using For King and Parliament. A little bit of tweaking, but they worked well.

I have heard that "Twilight of the Sun King" is the set to use.

I just purchased "Twilight of the Sun King", sounds like it will do the job and not expensive.

I own or have owned most of the rules you listed. I have played some of them. I guess it really depends on what you are going for in terms of game experience.

For me, I like Maurice and In De Veritas. Neither are specifically designed for the GNW (like say Ga Pa) but both have very simple mechanics. Twilight of the Sun King has a very interesting approach as well.

The use of National Advantages in Maurice can be used to craft tactical approaches (like Swedish aggressive tactics).

I would be tempted to try a Piquet variant as the very different armies can be nicely characterised by the individual decks.

I've decided to go with 6mm (Baccus) for the large battle look. I may collect a few 28mm figures for skirmishes later on.

We are working on learning GaPa. Interesting set of rules and I expect will have a certain flow once we get into the swing of things. Author was kind enough to answer a question on FB. The army lists seem to be very thorough. I got the rules through Lulu.

Thanks Sam, I just bought the Gå På rule book from Lulu as well. Nice ideas in there.

Just to clarify, are we talking about Under the Lily Banners, which is a board game about the Thirty Years War, or Beneath the Lily Banners, which is wargaming ruleset published by League of Augsburg?

Have you considered Stephen Danes' Lace Wars rules, published by Partizan Press?
