I've got a big battle Late Antiquity game scheduled for Saturday. And I'm in training.
No, I'm not obsessed with winning but if I have time, I like to set up some drills pre-game to refresh myself with the rules (in this case our own "Tribute of Spears"). I can also try out some tactics so things go smoothly. For instance, in these rules, skirmish cavalry can move & shoot in the same turn. It's good to get your intervals correct because if you don't, you may get caught in the pursuit. Do others run such drills? |

Not drills, but I do review the rules, especially the ones which are special for the scenario in question. I also try to anticipate which rules will trigger an objection from other players -- I review those rules in particular, so I can point out the finer points as needed. I had to search the rules PDF to manually create my own Index, as the publisher/author did not do so. It has helped, immensely, but it is still challenging, at times, to find clarity in the rules, as written. Cheers! |

It seems a good idea and I have considered it but I never did it. |

Not lately, but at one time they were a standard thing before big "formal" games. I remember one in particular where we--being the underdogs--had a total of more than twenty dress rehearsals and map exercises before the first die was rolled. Things did not go well for the "advantaged" side. |

Oh, these look great! As if they would look anything but…… I almost went ahead and started a big order in 1/72 for this era. I have about 6 to 8 packs already. However, I also own a load of figs for it from Baccus in 6mm. I may go ahead and do the 6's first and then see. I own Simon MacDowall's Comitatus which looks interesting amongst a few other sets. I'm looking forward to pics from your game. Always a pleasure seeing what your games look like!
Thank John |

Part of the challenge of wargaming for me is we do several periods & use several rule sets. Pre-game drills helps stopping me getting rules confused. |

No drills but I do re-read the rules and review the scenario if I have enough time before games. If we are doing a historical battle I like to read a brief history of the battle. |

If by drills you mean playing out a sequence to ensure that nothing strange happens because of a scenario design flaw, yes have done that. |

In one way, the drills worked. We had a smooth, quick game. In another, they didn't. I lost. |

I'd love to see some pics if you get a chance! Thanks John |
