One of the things that causes tension in modern naval wargames is not knowing exactly what's out there until you have an identification, either by electronic or visual means. I've used various markers over the years but never really been happy with any of them.

Then I found some 1″ fighter shapes on etsy, laser cut from wood. They were a couple of quid, I think, for about 25. Then a little searching brought up some ovals which were again a couple of quid for something like 200. Coupled with some bases I already had and painted yellow (the NATO Joint Military Symbology colour for unknown contacts) with 4-digit track numbers and I have some nice tactile markers to push around until the model is placed on the table.

The air contacts have 2mm diameter magnets underneath so they sit on top of my flight stands.
