Mine is the Eboncross Knights (fantasy Teutonics), black cross on white. The army is mostly Teutonic-knight type troops including bombards and longbows and a lot of crossbows and some heavy infantry with cleavers, and Brother Knights and Brother Sergeants. The fantasy elements include the old Ral Partha knights flying (diving) on hippogryphs, and a variety of fighting priests, and monks and penitents, and various spooks (Esprit de Corps, the army standard, and the Angel of Mercy (the camp). They are very tough and I fight them against nasty evils like vampire counts or demonics.

My favorite I made was the Red Cult. Took some famous forces from history who wore red sometimes. Early Imperial Romans were the core infantry. Revolutionary War British provided the missile troops and artillery. Red dragon, red balrog were my monsters. Ultimate leader was a red demon named Mars. Sub commanders were Julius Caesar and Lord Cornwallis. Had a lot of fun with that one.

I had a Byzantine army back in the 70s that killed many an orc and goblin.

Tough call. I love all my children…

Dwarves are probably at the top by a thin margin over Rohan. But then, dwarves, being all infantry (at least in my worlds), are slightly easier to paint (and I've had ‘em longer), so I've got more of them to field.

Though honestly I tend to combine them all (along with elves) into a grand Army of the West or Army of the Free Folk, so it's probably a moot point.

I am always a sucker for a dwarf army with a bear theme.

doc mcb12 Nov 2021 11:13 a.m. PST

Yes, I've always had a soft spot for dwarves. Difficulty is making them PLAYABLE in a number of circumstances. Our dwarven army does include the Gruffs (mounted on mountain goats) and the Longarms (two-dwarf crewed heavy bolt throwers) and the Drums of Doom and various other stuff with some offensive power -- but it is still hard to play them except defensively.

doc mcb12 Nov 2021 11:13 a.m. PST

And the Red Cult sounds cool.

Stryderg12 Nov 2021 11:21 a.m. PST

I like Elves, shooty and fast movers, usually.

Bashytubits12 Nov 2021 11:32 a.m. PST

Lizardmen the organized, civilized empire types. I especially like the RAFM reptiliads. Phalanxes and Legions, oh my.

Perris070712 Nov 2021 11:37 a.m. PST

Gondor. With Rohan a close second.

Dwarves! Commanders on bears, cavalry on goats, heavy cavalry on boars. Bugman's rangers as scouts and tons of heavy infantry. Plus cannons and bolt throwers as artillery. Packs a punch!!

doc mcb12 Nov 2021 11:43 a.m. PST

I think as with hobbits, so also with dwarves: they are most effective as part of an alliance. Iirc David's Bear Clan includes dwarves and humans and ursines; that is, it is a culture defined by BEARNESS rather than by race.

The sylvan elves of Wyldwood and the Dark Elves of Moonglade are similar, i.e. the dominant races commanding a wide range of allied or subordinated races.

I find that narrowly-focused armies are just too hard to play and tend to be push-overs except on their own home ground.

I once saw a HOTT army somewhere that was made up of My Little Pony figures… I thought that was brilliant.

My daughter used to play in games based on The Warriors series of books, which was about semi-feral cats. I think we had more fun naming them than anything else, but she painted those miniatures herself. The rules were a mod of Blood and Swash, I think.

It has to be the orc hordes of Mordor for me. That faction has the most fully painted models in my collection.

Plenty more in the "some day I'll paint 'em" queue too!

evilgong12 Nov 2021 10:15 p.m. PST

Saruman.

KSmyth12 Nov 2021 10:38 p.m. PST

Easy, it's Rohan.

doc mcb13 Nov 2021 7:05 a.m. PST

"For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea, and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hooves of wrath rode over them. Then the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."

doc mcb13 Nov 2021 7:09 a.m. PST

I had hopes for Jackson's film, to let us hear the singing, but his genius was not up to it, so I guess we will have to wait and hear it in Heaven.

Yeah, Doc, I suspect that's something the good professor wrote that sounds great on the page, but really couldn't come across in real life— singing mixed with horses' hooves thundering, screams, the clash of weapons and shields— it would probably be an unrecognizable cacophony.
But I love the passage, and it's one of the many reasons I love fielding the Rohirrim.

McWong7313 Nov 2021 3:26 p.m. PST

Wood Elves and Rohan.

doc mcb13 Nov 2021 8:09 p.m. PST

Yeah, you'd have to do it as an orchestra and choir over-sounding the men. And it would likely end up cheesy.

With Different Faction after Dwarves, but I am like Parzival on this.

Orcs and goblins, judging by what I've got.

I have a preference for the goblinoids. Otherwise I prefer ordinary human warriors.

Der Krieg Geist23 Nov 2021 12:59 a.m. PST

Don't exactly know why, but blue nosed red faced Hobgoblins are my favorite fantasy army, followed closely by mixed reptilian hybrid monster armies. Kind of Jack Vance/ Michael Moorcock inspired stuff. :)

A Lot of Gaul24 Nov 2021 6:31 a.m. PST

Ever since FGU published their Saurians supplement for C & S, my favorite fantasy army has been lizardmen. After a lengthy hiatus from fantasy wargaming, I am currently painting up my own version of a reptile men army for GURPS Banestorm 4th edition.
