After a long lay off I've gotten back into painting some new 40K miniatures. You can say what you like about GW pricing and business practices but I do find their miniatures great fun to paint and the 40K universe appealing.

I wanted to use this project to try and push my painting skill set in new directions so I plumped to try things like On Source Lighting and weathering techniques. I've also decided to try and paint the miniatures up in what the kids are calling Grimdark style which means dirt, rust, mud, blood and way more skulls than is sensible.

I've been on my own homebrew Space Marine Chapter called the Crusaders Carmine so I thought id share my first few minis here (though I know 40K isn't a particularly popular topic on TMP)

you can find more on my 40K blog if you are interested here

I have seen lots of Space Marines and these might be the best

I like

  • color palette, reds with a couple of blue details
  • conversion, heads, skulls on armor and other added details
  • unit consistency

I don't like the single clean skull on the bases – you realize I'm nit picking here ? I would suggest a few more bones from other parts of the body, or a couple of more beat up skulls

Great work.

Thanks guys

John@ The skulls were a bit of a joke on my part based on the old GW joke "Needs more skulls".

Needs more skulls

Makes perfect sense to me. One skull on its own looks lonely
