A scenario that can be played by a majority of gamers, because it can be adapted to most periods.

That is a couple of John Waynes against the countless unnamed villains ; may be played solo or in teams of player characters against an advancing horde of bad guys with a determined behaviour (probably using a reaction table).

Would fit Old West, modern/sci-fi/apocalyptic, weird WW2, medieval, victorian, pulp… Zombies are eternal and fit any period, but the villains can be anything that's rather primitive in their tactics. So that most playtesters would have minis to represent the protagonists.

As for the rules, WarEngine, Chain Reaction and maybe Aetherverse would certainly be best, for the same reason: their adaptability.

Well, GW's LoTR game is very suitable for this sort of thing – Aragorn, Boromir, and Gandalf can fight a horde of goblins, as long as they skirmish just right. And the goblins have a chance at winning, too, if they can manage to position their mobs to swamp the heroes.

You could probably expand the rules to inclued firearms and even sci-fi stuff, if you wanted.

Yes, I was actually thinking of modern/sci-fi stuff in the first place. From what you say, LOTR would be perfectly suitable, but I have no experience with it.

There is a scenario in the Warhammer rulebook, "The Seven Knights", that puts seven hero/lord characters up against a standard army. I have not played it. There is also a heroes vs army scenario in the WH Lustria supplement that came out last summer. Haven't played that one either. But it is a fun concept, and I think you are right that you could play a good with everybody running characters and the opposing mass of Bad Guys on auto-pilot.

And of course you could start by watching through the Seven Samurai by Kurosawa.

Necromunda allowed you to create Spira uber-characters and pit a team of 3 or so against an entire gang.

The scenario from the Aliens movie?

"What do you mean they cut the power? They're (frigging) animals man!"
