Inspired by a female samurai figure with lots of exposed flesh on the NSFW … would you rather paint large areas of soft subtle shades on flesh and fabric or tons of intricate detail on samurai armour? Its an artificial dichotomy – there's lots in between. But there are also many examples other than samurai with the contrast between large areas subtle shading or simpler colouring but more fiddly details. Of the two, I prefer fleshy, fabricy painting. |

I like large areas of solid colors. I don't even think about striving for "subtle shades" of anything. My skills are not up to the task, and I'll be looking at them at arm's length anyway. The blocky style makes it easier to distinguish minis across the table. |

Either one of those would be wash and drybrush for me, etotheipi. My problem is when a different color is clearly called for--piping or buttons being obvious examples--and the scale at which I stop troubling with it. It's gotten easier as I've gotten out of intermediate scales. |
