"When it comes to character development in any work, either on the page or the screen, there are many ways to set characters apart from the background or even each other for the audience. In the realm of military science fiction, action movies, and shooter video games, the weapon that the characters or player chooses, is an important element in the identity of this character/player. In this blogpost, FWS will explore genesis of why certain weapons are chosen to be featured in a media

It seems every-Bleeped texting-thing has a trend. Clothing, shoes (remember Reebok Pumps?), hairstyles, toothpaste (no shit), soda, movies. Even yogurt, YOGURT for christsakes, has trends. This also includes firearms, and at the moment, the M4/M16/AR15 are the trendy gun. Everyone I know has an AR15 that they are modding out, and every video game/TV show/movie has an M4 carbine. This was not so when I was a kid. Back then, the M16/AR15 appeared dead, and it looked like the US Military was going to replace it at any moment. In those days, the AK47/74, MP5, Desert Eagle, and the Beretta 92F were the trendy guns. In these situations, the weapon of choice is not about the realities of the tactical situation, but because it is trendy, and the creator cannot or will not think outside of the box…"

"I want to introduce you to a personal friend of mine. This is an M41A pulse rifle. Ten millimeter with over-and-under thirty millimeter pump action grenade launcher."

1874 Winchester 30-30 Lever Action. Nothing trendy, it just worked.

If I could carry it for work, I would carry the .44 Automag.

Zorg ZF-1 for me….

Stryderg31 Oct 2021 7:12 p.m. PST

Colt 1911, the classics never go out of style.
Although, the Zorg ZF-1 is a tempting runner up.

For a sidearm I do like the Colt 1911 – plus side reliable, big slug, great stopping power; minus side heavy, only 7 in the mag and 1 in the chamber – I do like the Glock 17; smaller round but more of them and utterly reliable

oldjarhead01 Nov 2021 8:45 a.m. PST

Glock 22, 15 rounds of .40 S&W-15. Plus lots of practice

For CC I like my Ruger LCP, light weight, reliable, and accurate. Also, for fun and protection(more about that later) my Ruger LCP 22lr is great

For those of you that that say a 22lr is not effective, let me put a couple of rounds into you and then we can discuss it grin

Remember, the main point of self-defense is get get the target to disengage, not necessarily to terminate it. And for those of you that have never killed someone up close and personal, it isn't like the video games, it does change you.

And for another take on your weapon of choice:

And if you want to know what I have for home defense, try kicking in my front door and you will meet them grin

Meh, fists always seemed to work for me. Never felt so frightened of the world at large that I needed to arm myself.

pzivh43 Supporting Member of TMP01 Nov 2021 11:50 a.m. PST

Simple comparison

Effective range of fists: about 3-4 feet.
Effective range of 9mm: about 100 meters
Effective range of 5.56mm: about 400 meters

Those are home defense ranges? You must live in a factory sized building. :D Like I said, never felt so frightened of the world at large that I needed to arm myself. I do have a machete somewhere, but in the 32 years in my home the only time it has been used is to cut some brush. Must be real dangerous where you all live, glad I don't live there.

Cardinal Ximenez01 Nov 2021 12:51 p.m. PST

Ruger P90. Great for dishing out a pistol whipping in the unlikely event that 2,070 grains isn't enough to get the job done.

Not a comment on your neighborhood, machinehead. Never used my weapons or my fists in my home either. But I know that I'm no Mike Tyson, so I like a little edge. YMMV.

StoneMtnMinis,
I totally agree, .22cal LCP.

Get in lots of cheap practice, controlled follow up for multiple double taps, 11 round mag? Also, if you use it in self-defense it's not like you were toting a magnum hoping to blow someone away. Unless of course you put a 5 round group between his eyes. Try to miss at least once.

Do you have the integral laser pointer?

chironex, LOL excellent.

I mean, you could probably do the same thing with a gel ball blaster, but I don't have one yet, and I do have cookware around the place.
