guys a logistics question concerning refueling a carrier battle/strike group
a underway replenishment group consists of oilers/ ammunition ships /store ships etc
my question
does the replenishment group sail with the carrier group
or does it sail separately and join the carrier group somewhere on the ocean?
is the replenishment group assigned to a carrier group or does one replenishment group cover a number of carrier groups

Post WWII, fueling CBG's normally consisted of AO's
in sufficient number and escorts.

Those would usually be located at such a distance and in
such a location as to be considered 'safe'. The CBG
would, at need, determine a rendezvous point, usually for
the CV most in need, but sometimes for all the CV's
in the BG, presuming a sufficient number of AO's.

Ordnance normally would not be replenished under way
but could be at need.

The above from my cousin Jack, USNA '47, USN 1947-1977
and nav officer for various Pacific CV's 1950-retirement.

Usually sails separately and rendezvous.
In the 80's the BB could and would refuel its escorts.

During a hot war the AE would replenish ammo underway.
