"Alexander, Napoleon, Rommel. Military greatness can most easily be defined by comparison. These battlefield bumblers serve to provide that contrast…."

Such a short list, who's the guy running the show now?

Gaius Varro. Just wargames Cannae with the Ancient History class I teach. In all 8 games the Romans wiped the floor with Hannibal's army.

General James Wilkinson gets my vote. The general famous for never winning a battle but never losing a court martial!

Followed closely by Brigadier-General Winder never won a battle but got himself captured.

Re: Wilkinson -- and to boot he was in the pay of the Spanish while he was the American commander in the Mississippi Territory!

Has to be Lopez, his war was an atrocity he perpetrated on his own people.

Leopoldo Galtieri. 🤣

I think poor old Haig was a chap who had the bad luck to be promoted above his level of ability – and I agree, Lopez has to lead the list followed by Santa Anna

Lt. Gen. Sebastiano Visconti Prasca."Sure, six divisions are enough for us to take northern Greece." The unspoken part: If you bring in more divisions, you will also have to bring in a full general to lead them, relegating me to second place. Replaced after two weeks, by which time his offensive had been halted, the supply situation was appalling, and the Greeks had mobilized, and now had 100 battalions facing his 50, and were preparing to take the offensive.
Oopsie.

Townsend WW1 Kut defeat. personally very brave but left his men to die in a death march in which many died of lack of food and water plus murder by local arabs,

he was whisked away to a fairly luxurious prison which he saw as a recognition of his good generalship.
