Hmmmm, perhaps I can't see the forest for the trees, but looking at this free set of spacecraft combat rules for small ship combat in Traveller, I can't see the forest for the trees.

There are rules for how many hits you get, and for the various hit location types, e.g. hull, turret, drives, etc., but I can't for the life of me see any sort of way for determining which hull location, or system the hits occur against, randomly. It appears they leave that up to the players to determine on their own, or perhaps they just don't reference a "known" chart that isn't mentioned for that.

What am I missing?

It would be nice to have a chart, or charts for the various small ship types, like:

- Scouts
- Free Traders
- Far Traders
- Merchants
- Ship's Boats
- Cutters
- Close Escorts
- System Defense Boats
- Patrol Boats
- Fighters
- and others.

Anyone have any ideas on this, or has this already been done in another set of rules that we're supposed to use these rules with, and that just aren't mentioned?

I'd like to run some small-scale, Traveller spacecraft games, but so far that seems to be proving more difficult than one would think, especially after the initial release of the rules so many decades ago. From the reading I've done on the subject, it appears I am not the only one to have this concern.

What rules are you using for your small ship spacecraft games in the Traveller universe?

It's either missing due to an error or it's supposed to be the table from Book 2.

Yea, I was thinking perhaps it could just be assuming people would use the original Travller hit location chart, but I wasn't sure about that, given all the other details for the rules, and that omission.

I'll have to look at it again, or consider making my own for the various vessels, since some should probably be different than as for the standard chart.

Have you looked at Jovian Wars vs. Lightning Strike? link

With a price of "free," it seems worth checking out.

I would have sworn there were JC ship construction rules somewhere …

There's a location hit table under Combat section for vehicles. Its pretty much the same.

That's the chart for the Cepheus Engine. It should work. I can't find the chart in the SRD, but I just made a quick look.

I use Book2 chart. The Traveller SRD is a hot mess to decipher, but the Cepheus Engine is a much better solution.

For ships I use a combination of MAyday and Book2 or Book5 depending what sorta action I am looking for.
