GMT's Washington's War is very popular and pretty easy to get into. It's a great introduction to card driven war-games and designed by Mark Herman, who worked at SPI, Avalon Hill, Victory Games, and now designs for GMT Games.

If you're looking for the original 1776, it's available all over eBay, starting around $20. USD

Not sure, but I think perhaps ciaphas is looking for the basis of a campaign game, and as I recall, "1776" would do nicely.

If that's the case, can anyone recommend another such campaign system?

Gaming buddy and I tried a bunch of AWI games two years ago. Seriously, 1776 is still the best one despite its age. Nothing else played as well or captured the feel of it as well, tho they all have some nifty aspect.

You may want to check out End of Empire in board game geek. It was first a magazine game and then compass redid it. I picked up the magazine game with intent to use as a campaign tool. Haven't gotten around too it, but it's still in the tondo list. Good luck and look forward to your posts and progress.

I was looking for it as the basis of a campaign, mine got waterlogged. But if they are going for $20 USD or so I will crack on to ebay.

will have a look at the other suggestions.

Guidon Games "Spirit of '76" might be a good basis for the southern theater if you can find a copy. It was originally published as a magazine game in Panzerfaust or Campaign.
