Looks like we'll be playing Cowpens this weekend. Still have a pile of Stone Mountain Americans to be painted, but there are always too many distractions…

Cowpens was the first AWI battle I fought. It was on a coffee table in a caravan in Cornwall using card strips and Newbury Colonial rules. May 1983 and I was 16. Seems so long ago and only yesterday!

How did Cowpens turn out?

Jeffers19 Oct 2021 12:59 p.m. PST

Can't for the life of me remember! Considering the rules I was using I probably only managed three turns before the holiday ended.

I ran a Cowpens game, using The Sword and the Flame rules.
Tarleton committed no blunders, but it was still a close Patriot victory.

As a rule, I don't like refighting actual battles but I once put on a disguised Trenton for the club. The rebels became loyalists and the Hessians continentals, although I decreed due to the surprise attack they would move as Hessians (as per Loose Files). It actually played out like the original, with Rall even pegging it leading a counter-attack. Apart from setting up the starting positions I did nothing to stage manage the result, although I did warn ‘Rall' that the odds were stacked against him and he would do well to improve on the original. It helped that nobody else was familiar with the AWI, but I was pleasantly surprised that it turned out the way it did.

Going back a week: I can't recommend the SYW con enough! If you want to go, you should make the trek. It's a very special little convention, and much of the core cadre now lives hundreds of miles away but keeps coming back anyway. A few of us trek all the way from California.

I am ironically not much of a SYW fan, but I do like AWI games, and I play in Mike Wedding's annual Guns of Liberty game every year. I'd love to see more.

I sooooo want to go to that con, but it is at least a 10 hour drive one way.

If you make the drive, I'll bring the whisky. :-)

Nice to discuss gaming the American Revolution on the American Revolution Discussion Board. I ran a Spencer's Extra-Ordinary game for my club. Incase you didn't see the post on the Battle Report Board. My Flicker Page link.

I just read thru this post after years of being away from TMP and moving across the country; I'd be happy to play an AWI game or campaign, it's interesting and colorful units, what's not to like? Some pals in Austin had an interest but could never organize a game or complete armies (dilatory painters). My current new desire is to create a variant of TS&TF and build units for King Phillip's War, it seems tailor-made for TS&TF rules. This is backing up even more from the AWI or FIW, alas. John the OFM, no longer Winston Smith (?), you are both back AND "account locked" on TMP, it seems to me -- why is this, what is your current status, mon vieux? I remember you as one of the old stalwarts. Hope you have not gone away or been ostracized in my absence.
