I have some 25mm Japanese goblins/bakemono in Samurai armor. I have avoided painting them because the armor was a little intimidating, but I recently picked up some GW contrast paints and was wondering how they would work on that style. Has anyone tried that – I couldn't find anything on YouTube, etc. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!!

Err, try it?

My general rule.of thumb is contrast works best on textured surfaces, at its worst on a flat surfaces when it comes to 25mm and above. Have you a link to the models?

That's a good question

Samurai armour is hard because

  1. Lots of overlapping lacquered strips of steel
  2. lacing

So contrast paints will help with (1) but not (2). Usually the lacing is in a different colour, or white

So I found the the Legend of Five Rings goblins I had lurking at the back of the painting shelf and played around, and yes, I like the results – will take some pictures after I do a bit of lacing. Comes out too matt for lacquered metal, but that is easily fixable

I have been rude about "Templar black" as it has a NASTY green tinge to it make it neither warm nor cool. However, this is a good colour for lacquered armour …

McWong73 and jwebster, that is exactly what I was looking for! McWong73, they are mostly Clan Wars L5R goblins:

but some Dixon also:

I thought the contrast paints would work well on the goblin skin (which in pictures of Japanese mythology can be anything from blue to red to green) and their clothing which can be a more pastel color (some of the Dixon goblins are wearing fur loinskins which should work well too), but wasn't sure about the armor. And I happen to have some Templar black contrast paint! Jwebster, I would really like to see pics of your painted goblins, especially the lacing. I really appreciate the help, Japanese armor has always seemed difficult for me to get the right tone!
