When it comes to miniature wargaming, do you have a plan covering your future hobby activities?

Personal logo Old Contemptible Supporting Member of TMP04 Oct 2021 11:34 p.m. PST

Yes I do. I don't always follow it, but I do have a plan.

advocate04 Oct 2021 11:48 p.m. PST

I always have a plan. It rarely survives contact with events.

Keep Wargaming until I die, or some other catastrophe!

Martin Rapier05 Oct 2021 2:33 a.m. PST

Yes, usually. I plan what I need to buy, then buy it and paint it. There are the odd impulse buys etc, like everyone does.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 3:17 a.m. PST

Now I do, yes. But it took me long enough. I needed that plan c. 1985.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 3:30 a.m. PST

Plan! We don't need no stinking plans!

Yes

I have many plans and projects and a lead pile that makes the floorboards of my house creak… I'm thinking I have more plans than time….

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 4:07 a.m. PST

I have a plan I never stick to.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 4:11 a.m. PST

I am a free spirit – plans are for the squares.

In unrelated news – I have more figures and games than I can ever hope to use. Wonder how that happened?

Col Durnford05 Oct 2021 5:46 a.m. PST

I do keep a listing of unpainted figures, purchases, completed figures and figures on the painting table.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 5:54 a.m. PST

Yes, I do plan everything. But I also learned to roll with the punches.

huron725 Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 6:02 a.m. PST

Yes I have a plan and am pretty good about sticking to it.

John the OFM05 Oct 2021 6:31 a.m. PST

My "plan" at this moment is Yorktown, Redoubts 9 and 10.

Short Term and Long Term – for both gaming and painting

SBminisguy05 Oct 2021 8:14 a.m. PST

I have a rough plan – some to support game books/projects in process, others for fun.

Grelber05 Oct 2021 8:15 a.m. PST

For many years now, I have made an annual purchase plan. I try to keep the planned items a bit low, so I have left over money to buy things that catch my fancy, particularly new things. I have also put together a long term plan the past few years. I select items from the long term plan to fill out my annual plan, and then purchase things from my annual plan in the sequence that makes me happy. The process means that the un-sexy, not as interesting things also get bought, though they may be purchased last.
I'm starting to realize I probably also need to have a plan for painting figures and equipment. So, now I have one for the rest of the year. We'll see how that works out.
It may be that I also need to plan to set up games.

The thing with plans is that they need to be flexible.

The only plan I have ever had (and this is just recently) is "who gets my shite when I die?"

IronDuke596 Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 9:17 a.m. PST

Yes.

Stryderg05 Oct 2021 10:03 a.m. PST

Of course I have a…ooh, shiny!

Dagwood05 Oct 2021 10:09 a.m. PST

My current long-term "plan" is a "1066" project, Saxon, Norman, Viking, and Welsh armies (should keep me occupied for a few years).

Then there's the Colonial, WW2, buildings, etc., which fit into gaps whenever I get bored with the plan, which is often !

Yes, I have a plan.

No, I'm not a James Bond villian who will spend the next twenty minutes elaborating on it.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 11:02 a.m. PST

I used to but experience has taught me no plan survives
contact with my wife…

rustymusket05 Oct 2021 11:06 a.m. PST

I have a plan and am always changing it to the moment I make the purchase. Then I begin the new plan and change it……

olicana05 Oct 2021 12:54 p.m. PST

I always plan one project ahead and I stick to it pretty much. A project generally lasts 2 – 5 years. Current plan in train, Finish my 28mm Peninsular project.

Finished the French, almost finished the Brits (so that's about 2,000 figures done), bought the Spanish but haven't started painting. All told the collection will be in the region of 2,750 figures.

Here are the French all finished:

Here are some close ups of stuff up to now, all painted to a reasonable quality, I think you'll agree.

Its not the first project I've done at this size. I've also done a similar one for the SYW and Punic War, and a couple slightly smaller for the Italian Wars and the Early Crusades.

I always project for campaign level activity, so projects tend to be on the large, long term size. Nice when they are done though – then onto the next. Mine next will be the Sudan in 28mm, and quite smaller than the average collection (at around 1500 figures all in).

"Do I look like the kinda guy who has a plan?" – Joker

Those both inspire me to enter 28mm Napoleonics as a period, while at the same time terrify me to enter 28mm Napoleonics as a period.

A beautiful collection of figures.

wehrmacht05 Oct 2021 2:46 p.m. PST

Wow! Very impressive, Oli!

KSmyth05 Oct 2021 4:54 p.m. PST

I have a special place where all the plans I've made have gone to die.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2021 7:55 p.m. PST

My challenge isn't a plan, it is having the time to complete the plan.

I'm sorry, I know not this word.

Jeffers05 Oct 2021 11:28 p.m. PST

I make lots of plans. I just can't be bothered to execute them. I find it more entertaining to make the plans than play games!

Currently, the only plan I've made that has come to fruition involves getting rid of stuff.

I'm planning to get to work on the next step in setting up my walk-in closet as a hobby room soon. Real soon.

I have the drill and bits I need to make holes in some shelves to run an extension cord from the light socket to my desk lamp. I already put in a socket-to-plug adapter.

Just a painter07 Oct 2021 6:15 a.m. PST

Plan? No general idea yes. If I make to detailed a plan, my hobby will be too much like work.

Yesthatphil11 Oct 2021 5:01 p.m. PST

Of course!

Many plans.
Few achievements.

Captain Pete18 Oct 2021 12:49 p.m. PST

I do have a plan but my plans don't always survive first contact with my reality.

I will have a general plan or plans but sometimes they will change a bit. If I feel I always have to rigidly adhere to whatever plan I have made that definitely reduces the fun factor. I am in the hobby to have fun after all.
