Recently put the finishing touches to one of Sarissa's small houses for North America, this for my AWI collection. As with all MDF buildings a little bit of embellishment goes a long way to break away from that distinctive MDF 'look' and give a building a unique character. There's a tutorial here if you want to follow the build in more detail House with Porch for the AWI

Sarissa and Thingsfromthebasement are my go-to sources for AWI buildings. The choices are exponentially growing, compared to 10 years ago.

The OP was absolutely correct in substituting laser cut card for shingles. Another choice is laser cut heavy paper from Thingsfromthebasement.
Sadly, laser etched stone or shingles need enhancement.

Yeah, I think the best way to approach MDF models is that they make a great starting point for a building. Not all shapes lend themselves to a laser cut through 2mm MDF. Fortunately we live in a world where accessories in everything from cardboard to resin exist to add to your own scratch building skills.
