He does not explain why these weapons came about. Also Glaves have an earlier origin of recycled weapons. While Bills were from Billhooks Halberds were from plow Blades. |

While bills/billhooks seems pretty intuitive, I don't know that there is much basis for halberds from plow blades. Poleaxes are pretty universal and it's not a big jump from big axe to polearm. Stick a hook/spike on the back and you have the halberd. A plowshare also tends to not really be a cutting edge so much as a wedge. Sure, you could make it into something resembling a pole weapon (maybe inspired by Echetlus?), but it would probably be more shovel like. It's really not that surprising though that there are a prevalence of weapons evolved from agricultural tools as that would have been what was widely available for the masses of workers turned soldiery and up until the later periods where professional soldiers became the norm. |
