Whatever the case may have been they were tough, sneaky, and deadly fighters. With the possible exception of Emperor Commodus who made sure his opponents had been drugged, mutilated, or otherwise rendered incapable before he entered the arena. |

Actually the layer of fat protected the gladiators from deeper wounds. But underneath that were muscles; Lots of them! |
