Those could serve as radar antennae/sensor arrays, as well. They could also represent the James Webb space telescope. Cheers!

There was a ST: Next Gen episode wherein the crew looked in on a failed sensor array on the Cardassian(?) border. I believe it had hexagon arrays, similar to this. Cheers!
