They just look so …underarmed.

arealdeadone27 Sep 2021 9:36 p.m. PST

Zephyr, they are under armed. Except the FREMM, they are all glorified patrol ships designed for constabulary duties.

However nearly all modern ships pack less firepower than an equivalent older vessel.

Eg the 6,700 ton FREMM frigate pictured above (and the only real warship) packs fewer missiles than a 4,000 ton Oliver Hazard Perry.

To make things even more stupid the new US Constellation class is based on FREMM and is even more undergunned!

The daftest of all is the near 16,000 ton Zummwalt which has less firepower than a 9,500 ton Arleigh Burke (Flight II).

Oh and the first ship pictured is a rebadged Freedom class LCS which is the worst of the two LCS.

I am not fully into it so could you please explain why is Freedom class worst of other two, thanks

arealdeadone28 Sep 2021 5:20 a.m. PST

Freedom class has major propulsion issues the Independence class does not.

The USN has forgotten how to design warships, the program is a disgrace. There are several designs in service with other navies which are much better armed on half the displacement and at a third of the cost. At this point the best thing you could do with the LCS program is cease production immediately, decommission the existing ships, and transfer the crews and budgets to support the rest of the fleet.

I have little confidence… except in crews… but 'owt better than nowt'
This is 2021.. surely designers can provide multi-function,
climate capable warships?

A boat is Hull and Propulsion… kit it out how you like. for the craft… but you NEED Hulls, not Design Concepts.
50s/60s warships WERE updated… why not now?

I am NOT service, so they will know better, but 'Stealth' design might sound good… but you WILL get hit by 'something'… so construction/ survivabiility/ response capability, might be of more worth than concept
