John the OFM24 Sep 2021 9:40 p.m. PST

So this is not a pandemic of the unvaccinated but a pandemic of the obese. As many gamers have several comorbidities I don't blame them for being fearful and wanting to wearing a mask. You should do what you have carefully and prayerfully considered and consulted with your doctor.

Lies! Lies! Lies!
Based on the stupid BMI chart, my doctor says I'm obese. Lies!
Based on having 3 beers per night the doctor says I'm an alcoholic. Lies!(Doesn't everyone lie to their doctor? They're probably factoring lies into the database.)
Well, I do have high blood pressure, and I'm *ahem* not as young as I used to be.

So I vaxed. And I have no problem wearing a mask, since I know how to pinch the clip to not fog my glasses, and since I'M MAN ENOUGH TO PUT UP WITH SLIGHT ANNOYANCE, I mask up when required. This so if I get a breakthrough non symptomatic infection, I can heroically not spread it to those less healthy.

Thresher0124 Sep 2021 10:37 p.m. PST

Well said, Col. Scott ret.

War Scorpio25 Sep 2021 4:30 a.m. PST

Thank you for your service and wisdom, Col. Scott.

Lascaris25 Sep 2021 6:27 a.m. PST

Col. Scott posted

Perhaps amazingly of the deaths in America less than 1,000 were from COVID only. The vast majority of the deaths had more than four comorbidities, the top three had little to do with respiratory as I would have expected (obesity, depression and diabetes).

So taking your advice I queried "number of covid deaths without comorbidities" which led me to the CDC website. Per data through 9/22/21 the most common comorbidity was Influenza and Pneumonia at 47.3%
link

Now do I believe that the Flu/Pneumonia was the real cause of 315,419 deaths…probably not. If so, we're working the wrong problem. I'm guessing that those particular comorbidities are resultants of Covid.

So John, does that mean you feel safe enough to go to Historicon?

John the OFM25 Sep 2021 9:03 a.m. PST

Assuming that the Commonwealth doesn't shut everything down by mid-November and Historicon actually takes place…
I've said in the past that paying $40 USD for a one day pass for the privilege of shopping, not to mention the gas, tolls and food isn't worth it.
But if I did want to go, I'm double vaccinated, with a booster due in October. I'm also man enough to wear a mask in public for several hours. REAL MEN can put up with minor inconvenience for the common good. I wouldn't be running a marathon or playing NHL hockey. I can walk, chew gum and wear a mask at the same time. I did it regularly for hours at a time.

Gorgrat25 Sep 2021 9:28 a.m. PST

Nor could I live without your impish curmudgeonliness OFM. You are so cute!

Gorgrat25 Sep 2021 9:29 a.m. PST

As to your assertion that you are a real man because you wear a mask, well…

You are so cute!

John the OFM25 Sep 2021 12:09 p.m. PST

Well, real babies whine, cry and stamp their feet when Mommie makes them wear a clean shirt to go to Church, so…

hornblaeser25 Sep 2021 12:35 p.m. PST

It is simply totally insane seen here from europe. Yor deads are piling up. First it was the old, obese and sick, and now its the young. And you dont want to be vaccinated??? and you dont dont want to wear a paper mask?? have you no respect for our weak or sick? have you no respect for the common good? are you completely bonkers?

Rotundo25 Sep 2021 1:30 p.m. PST

Bunch of guys who were never going, ever! This is all they have. Sad really, what lives you must lead.

Disco Joe25 Sep 2021 2:25 p.m. PST

Gorgrat, you keep saying that John is so cute. Sounds like you are hitting on him.

Vidgrip25 Sep 2021 2:34 p.m. PST

I can certainly understand HMGS choosing to follow the CDC recommendation. It is the responsible thing to do.

Sadly I do find gaming with a mask to be a much diminished experience. I've done it in local game store and found it uncomfortable and a hindrance to communication. I also attended a local con where I did not have to mask because i could show vax papers. Even there, though, when there was someone masked at the table, I had to have them repeat themselves constantly. The mask, combined with the usual ambient con noise, made hearing difficult.

If I go, it will only be because my son still wants to go. He doesn't mind the mask. Everyone is different.

Gorgrat25 Sep 2021 3:47 p.m. PST

Guys, this is… gut busting.

If I ever recover from my ruptured sides, I really have to get around to suing you!😂😂😂😂

historygamer25 Sep 2021 4:27 p.m. PST

Any updates on what vendors are dropping out?

Why not look up the dealer map yourself?

Looks to me like a lot of dealers are going to attend.

historygamer26 Sep 2021 5:18 a.m. PST

I see they updated Old Glory dropping out. My group is debating what to do. Lots of uncertainty made more so by the self imposed mask requirement. That's a shame.

14Bore26 Sep 2021 5:30 a.m. PST

Had a to me big shopping list for old glory

Rotundo26 Sep 2021 5:32 a.m. PST

HG we decided to do it anyway, because we said we would. We put alot of work into these ventures. I do not think we will have enough players for our two biggest games. My dues are up on 11/18. I will revisit then.

historygamer26 Sep 2021 6:42 a.m. PST

And I respect that decision. Gamemasters are likely concerned about having players for their games. Unfortunately, I suspect the board decision just reduced that pool.

I was at Cold Wars in 2020. There were few games and few players to be found. Funny enough, lots of people suddenly appeared for the flea market.

Everyone has to make a decision that's best for them. Best wishes to you and your group.

John the OFM26 Sep 2021 6:46 a.m. PST

Any link to "Old Glory update"?

historygamer26 Sep 2021 6:57 a.m. PST

Not sure what you mean? They dropped out of the con.

John the OFM26 Sep 2021 7:17 a.m. PST

So, where did you hear that?

historygamer26 Sep 2021 7:31 a.m. PST

From them. My friend works for them.

Also, they seem to have been removed from the dealer hall map.

Uncertain times for vendors and attendees alike.

John the OFM26 Sep 2021 8:16 a.m. PST

Ok. Thanks.

HMS Exeter26 Sep 2021 12:13 p.m. PST

Looks like Sash and Saber are gone too. This was to be expected given how intertwined they are with OG.

TSD10126 Sep 2021 4:35 p.m. PST

Since Rustycop wants us to look at bright sides maybe now all the professional flea market sellers with their rows of shrinkwrapped games and minis will finally have a spot in the dealer hall with a huge discount.

kalgaloth26 Sep 2021 7:31 p.m. PST

It's great to have the convention again. I'll wear a mask and dance a lil jig if it allows me to attend a convention. It's been far too long.

Personal logo Old Contemptible Supporting Member of TMP26 Sep 2021 9:06 p.m. PST

Factors such as obesity, diabetes, etc are factors. It is not what kills. They make you more susceptible to Covid. The cause of death is Covid. If you are battling cancer you are more susceptible to the virus. This makes wearing masks even more important.

If HMGS would just require proof of vaccination matched up with a drivers license we wouldn't need to wear a mask. But
it is their show and they can set the rules however they like. If you don't like the rules then don't go. Have your own convention. If there was no mandate for masks or vaccination. Then I would not go. I wouldn't whine about it I just would not go.

Not wearing a mask when required is being selfish. It would make things a lot easier for everyone to just get vaccinated. They are safe and they work. We wouldn't have to worry about masks.

Just because you think your are in good health doesn't mean you can't get it and it certainly doesn't mean you can't give it to others. I am fully vaccinated but my state requires I wear a mask when in public. So I do. The only issue I have is that I have trouble hearing people but that just means I have to ask them to repeat what they said. No big deal.

Can you imagine if the polio vaccine was being rolled out today?

Russ at OG has posted his reasons for not attending and he has been very clear that the Board decision is not a part of that decision.

" If HMGS would just require proof of vaccination matched up with a driver's license…"

Is a very good idea. I really wish HMGS had gone this way, as I suspect they'll lose more folks over the mask mandate than they would have over a vaccine/test mandate

LOL, well, at least one! And we all know who it is….. OOPS, supposed to be discussing the convention. Yea, I'm going to pass on this one considering the circumstances. Best wishes for everyone who does attend, will catch up at a later convention when things are "back to normal".

It's a pity that the result of the near elimination of some serious diseases has led to complacency rather than gratitude.

Avoidance of crippling or lethal diseases is something our ancestors would have given a lot to have. We now have this luxury in the larger economies and a vocal minority moan bitterly that they want the liberty to die in an unpleasant and painful way.

It is staggering – especially when a large part of the world would still give a lot to have what some for no sensible reason reject.

Tumbleweed Supporting Member of TMP28 Sep 2021 5:37 a.m. PST

I had polio when I was 16 months old in 1952. If we had the Salk vaccine back then I would not have been handicapped for the last 68 years.

1500 people would still be alive in Nelson County, Virginia, the epicenter of the polio crisis.

And now people whine and sob about their "rights."

Sick.

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP28 Sep 2021 7:14 a.m. PST

We are of an age Tumbleweed & I too remember kids (and teachers) at school with callipers from its effects. I didn't get the vaccine either but my younger brother did. I was lucky and avoided Polio, even though there were some outbreaks locally.

Sadly the distress that outbreaks of many diseases caused isn't remembered any more. More than a few families I know were affected in some way and, as you say, would have been glad to accept the protection we now take for granted.

dapeters28 Sep 2021 8:32 a.m. PST

I am sorry to hear that Tumbleweed under the miss guide notions of rights we complete lost sight of right and wrong.

After returning from Barrage I would like to congratulate Hawkes for a job well done, masks where based on the local mandate and state as it should be, only a few masks where seen and that is fine. +1 to COL Scott Ret. well said Sir.

14Bore28 Sep 2021 3:00 p.m. PST

The articles on Covid, alternative treatments, who is most vulnerable, and the %99 survivability are out there but you have to look.
I am going if permitted, I will wear a mask, it won't stop it but if it's for the show I'm in.

Jeez, What a shame Gorgrat is in the dawghouse.
Was it something he said? LMAO

War Scorpio01 Oct 2021 6:03 p.m. PST

No worries, Dadster, I've been in the dawghouse myself. No big deal. A badge of honor. Resistance to group thought and bullying. He will be back at it in no time. :)

Dadster Supporting Member of TMP02 Oct 2021 8:33 a.m. PST

I've been ther myself. For arguing with someone just as open minded as the guy in there now. Badge of honor. Ok, if you think so. It's a place for people who break the rules Bill set for his site. :)

kcabai02 Oct 2021 8:51 a.m. PST

Perhaps a Badge of Pushing the envelope, or Discovery is more appropriate. Yes Bill has a clear cut set of rules for the site. However the exact criteria is subjective, and open to interpretation. ;)

Dadster Supporting Member of TMP02 Oct 2021 9:49 a.m. PST

Yes I agree. But it is his site and he sets the standards of acceptable and unacceptable as is his prerogative as owner. Whether one agrees or not. :)
