At long last makers are recognising the significance (whatever the military value) of the ARVN in the Vietnam War.

Gringos 40 seem to be enthusiastic with a third set of figures to be released as below. I have my first five figures from the earliest set to work on. I have not yet got my T49 tracks for my M4A4 and I am out of Prussian figures for Waterloo right now….so no excuse not to get back to 28mm!

Well, from you first ARVN, I have today seen this chap "in the flesh" for the first time today. He is just what I wanted from ARVN. Short stature, under a huge helmet, tightly tailored lower legwear and Asiatic features.

Mine will be bog standard PBI ARVN, not the colourful elites.

Good luck anyone trying to do a QC on an ARVN MP helmet. Funny how Fliegerabwehrkanone gave rise to the FLAK that is now universally understood

Liam

good idea on painting a standard A.R.V.N.figure
even the normal infantry managed to cameo their
helmets…a minimum of black paint stripes roughly
applied..and often a coloured bright neck tie..and
the badges..or "patches" as they were called..these
were hugely important to the A.R.V.N troops…there
is a story of an Australian advisor to the 2nd battalion
1st A.R.V.N Rregiment…checking into his hotel before
joining the Regiment ..upon his arrival the staff noticed
the number one in white on a sky blue badge, they all bowed
together ,and told him he now had a "best room upgrade" as the number one was a mystical number.as as a VIP Number one Guy he only had to mention what he wanted and it was his for the taking……….!!

deadhead – Some ARVN units, especially with Truong's 1st Division had great military value.

That trooper with the M3…uh way too beefy lookin. Looks like USMC..

and this chap is described as ARVN scowling.

Well he is just what I had been asking for as characteristic of these poor devils, dwarfed by his M16 and helmet

At a glance, that officer at ease looks the best yet.

and the latest show something I have been wondering about, the lack of heavy weapons for these little guys to struggle with. Now we are seeing the M60 and BARs for example. At a glance, my favourite is the chap with the Carbine and LAW. He is everything i wanted in the "ARVN look";

thank you Liam……..pleased you like the Heavy Duty A.R.V.N!!

Heavy duty sure.

But my prize goes to the little skinny guy with the carbine and the LAW. He is not just a smaller US Marine, downsized, he is the best yet for that "look" I wanted. Those daft tailored trousers/pants/overalls whatever you call them…that tight, just right.

We do need M60s firing kneeling or prone, with an assistant too.

I will not ask for a Saigon Police chief with a pistol for Tet. That might be a bit much (but what a conversion……..) and the unfortunate other chap did deserve it they say. His check shirt might be tricky.

jammy four Sponsoring Member of TMP21 Oct 2021 4:03 a.m. PST

thanks Liam for the interesting comments..i agree the A.R.V.N had a certain look, this took ages to perfect for Gringo40s and a lot of research.noted your comments..more pictures en route!

I think he is really well modelled and just what I wanted from ARVN figures;

and now another one painted by Andy Singleton. Again I like that this gent has the ARVN look about him, but he must work out to wield the BAR like that. I would be kind to him and give him wall for cover and support for his bipod;

Liam,thanks for posting,,despite the size and
weight of the BAR the A.R.V.N infantry coped well
with them,and were fond of them as weapons.

Pyrate Captain13 Jan 2023 6:32 p.m. PST

I read once where ARVN strategy was based on their belief in a protracted war as opposed (on the surface) for an American desire for victory. Thus ARVN policy was to allow foreign powers to expend themselves and reserve ARVN for a protracted war after the allies left.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP15 Jan 2023 2:13 p.m. PST

That is a generous way of explaining how corrupt higher ranks in ARVN misappropriated funds from the USA into their own overseas accounts, for as long as the cash kept flowing.

The little guys on the front line were starved of kit, pay and leadership.

Hence the famous question "Why can't our g…ks fight like their g…ks?". They could have, and sometimes did.
