When I was a teen, I read a book that was entirely the Medal of Honor citations for all of the winners to date. It was truly an amazing read. Out of all of them, Erwin's was the one that struck me as the most amazing and the one that required the most sheer willpower. I have remembered it ever since and whenever the MOH comes up in conversation, I once again pass on his story. Things left out of the article. He went home and married his high school sweetheart.
