You might not know that the famous fantasy card game was also responsible for a line of miniature figures.

Do you play Magic the Gathering today? Did you ever?

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP02 Sep 2021 8:40 p.m. PST

Yep. Every few years I get into it casually but drop out after playing with the lifestyle gamers who take it way too far.

Howler02 Sep 2021 8:42 p.m. PST

no. Just not interested. Those that I know who play it really enjoy it though

rmaker02 Sep 2021 9:25 p.m. PST

I knew about the miniatures, but I've never played MtG.

No, never.

Green Tiger02 Sep 2021 11:02 p.m. PST

I have played it but just with what you get in the starter set never understood games where you win by having spent more than your opponent and I have a miniatures spin off for it somewhere but I've never played it…

Lazyworker02 Sep 2021 11:19 p.m. PST

I played some games with my friend's cards during first edition in the 90's. Never purchased any of the miniatures but I wouldn't mind having that minotaur model in my collection if I could find it cheap enough.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine03 Sep 2021 2:29 a.m. PST

I used to play it with my son (along with Pokémon) he never really got in to wargaming but he would play cards games and military/ fantasy themed board games with me. We had fun I still have 100s of cards but I haven't played in years.

Played it with my son and daughter when it first came out. Haven't played in a long, long time.

Played it when it first came out. Got rid of it when i saw what a money sink it was. Now I wished I'd have held on to those cards, they would have more than paid off on the investment.

rustymusket03 Sep 2021 6:09 a.m. PST

Heard of it but never played or looked into playing it.

CeruLucifus03 Sep 2021 6:42 a.m. PST

Always felt it was a good game but never wanted to collect cards or build decks. My RPG group in the 2000s had past Magic collectors; their consensus was the only fair way to play was to all buy new packs and open them, pass around to build decks and play with only what was on the table. We had a couple sessions a year like that which were always fun. They were always stunned when at the end of the evening I would give my cards away.

I saw a tournament on ESPN2 while stuck in bed in the hospital years ago.
It was so incomprehensible that it was fascinating.
After I got out, not only did I never buy any cards, I never got any minis either. But I did get a good story about how few tv channels were available in the hospital.

Played a lot back when it first went big with the Revised Edition (3rd), stopped when 4th came out and didn't want to start buying cards all over again.

At some point, I'll cash out and get a good return on those cards!

I played it pretty intensively in the mid-late 90s. It was (and I guess still is) pretty cool as a system because of the near-infinite variety of strategies that were possible (even if a few particular ones tended to dominate tournaments at any given time). I stopped playing because to do so competitively became too much of a time sink keeping up with new cards, strategies, rules interpretations, tuning decks etc, and non competitive play was not nearly as engaging. Like miniMo I need to sell of my collection before the MtG collectors come to their senses.

I got into it at the beginning and stayed collecting until Ice Age. I quit playing when they kept nerfing my favorite decks in favor of what the cool kids were playing. I finally sold my collection to a young guy who was just starting to move from playing to collecting. It paid for three 3d printers and I have never regretted it since.

Rich Bliss03 Sep 2021 7:01 p.m. PST

Just once. It's not interesting to me since the games are won in the building of the deck, not the playing of the game.

Zephyr103 Sep 2021 9:34 p.m. PST

I wasted too much money on it before realizing there was no way to completely collect a set of cards unless you spent even more money…

Korvessa03 Sep 2021 10:52 p.m. PST

Yes,
like others with my son. He doesn't do wargames but will play that

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP03 Sep 2021 11:49 p.m. PST

Never touched it. Haven't seen the miniatures (knowingly, anyway).

CPBelt04 Sep 2021 6:08 a.m. PST

Yes! I own 40K+ cards and have detailed inventories. I play casually, so I don't need the budget busting cards. If I want what I consider an expensive card for my deck, I print it on a color laser printer. I also balance my decks so as not to irritate others with killer cards. Been playing 8ish years? I also collect certain cards, like Elephants and Basic Lands. I usually buy single cards online.

Playing CCGs since 1999 has always been a main hobby for me. Sadly, players have moved and a couple have died unexpectedly. I still build decks, primarily Jumpstart cubes, but am solo at the moment.

Being a 58 year old conservative Christian who doesn't drink or swear makes it harder finding like-minded players for anything, including miniature gaming.

I'm sure no one read the the above.

-------- Love MtG. It's incredibly deep and flexible. Never bothered with the miniatures, even though D&D 5E is now crossed into the game.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP04 Sep 2021 10:14 a.m. PST

Never played MtG.

Did play the minis game. It's OK. After the game tanked, I got a bunch of reasonable fantasy minis for less than $1 USD each.

Huscarle05 Sep 2021 11:24 a.m. PST

Never played MtG, although I used to play a fair few other card games, until I realised how tough it was to get a full set of cards; money better spent elsewhere grin

No, not my thing.

Albus Malum10 Sep 2021 7:08 a.m. PST

I wish my friends would have told me to start playing 6 months earlier, and I wish I had dropped out of the college coarse I was taking and had bought more magic cards, I would be much, much, richer now if I had. I also wish I had bought some of those black lotus cards when they were 200 dollars each… ARGHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh.

COL Scott ret11 Sep 2021 1:42 p.m. PST

Heck no, keep those kids off my lawn.

The Last Conformist23 Sep 2021 2:24 a.m. PST

I played it fairly intensively for a while in the mid-'90s, then more sporadically until I sold off my collection in about 2005.

I've played a handful of times with other people's cards since, it's a still a good game, but not good enough for me to want to dive back into it – it's a time and money sink and I've got enough of those already.

QUATERMASS09 Oct 2021 10:01 p.m. PST

I played a bit in the 90s with a mate's collection,as I remember you blindly attacked and the defender got to choose how to defend didn't like that!
I also got into werewolf the Apocalypse, star trek TNG and illuminate from sj games.
Enjoyed them at the time looking back I have no idea why! Waste of money hated the common, uncommon, rare thing.

JimSelzer27 Oct 2021 10:59 p.m. PST

never have never will

MrZorro08 Dec 2021 9:09 a.m. PST

I tried it a few times over the years but in the end I always get disappointed by the amount of money needed to have a competitive deck. Prefer miniature wargaming hands down. (No pun intended) =)
