I am in need of some plastic storage boxes for individual based figures namely gunners – sappers and generals.

I use the Sterilite 19638606 Large Clip Box (14" x 11" x 2.7") for battalions and batteries. But these are way too big for what I want.

I need something to keep individual figures from banging together and dinging the paint. I am at the point now that I have more than enough generals and gunners that this is a problem.

Any ideas or solutions ?

Plastic boxes for lead figures – not plastic figures

The gunners and sappers are on 1" x 1" bases and the generals are on 2" x .75" Litko wood bases

Foam padding, such as found in the link, above, will eventually scratch off paint as the figures rub against it, in transport.

The best recommendation I can offer, is to use magnetic sheet in the bottom of your plastic box, and put metal on the bottom of the figure bases. They will stick to the magnet sheet well enough to avoid most banging around.

I do not do this, but it makes perfect sense. My mini's sit in plastic tackle boxes, and though they do get bounce around, I have not had any issues, yet, in 20 years.

I apply the Minwax Dip Technique to my mini's, so that may be why I have not had any paint chipping issues yet. Cheers!

Don't you guys varnish your figures?

I've never had damaged paint on figures in a foam tray.

This is an issue I grappled with for a while, and became more critical when I discovered some ancient 15mm figures corroded into a pile of white dust because of moisture. The solution I now use is building mdf/pine trays which fit into a standard document storage box, and lining each row with felt. I must admit my system is designed for air travel, so it may be over engineered for most folks use. This video outlines the process for building such a storage box, in this case for micro-armour, but for other types of figures you simply adjust the height of the tray and width of each row in the tray.

I do Dullcote the figures but that only goes so far. I might add that being in Florida and the figures not being in a climate controlled game room limits the life span of any type of foam(s)

I'm looking for sometype of box that I can put 1-3 or so figures per compartment and not suffer too much from figures banging into each other (the guys I game with are not known for their manual dexterity or care in putting figures away)

I went from a few generals to now having about 60 of various nationalities and 75-100 single gunners/sappers of all nationalities.

And and btw these are 25/28mm figures

Do you have a moral or religious objection to Feldherr? They sell fabric "boxes" with foam inserts which will handle 160 individually mounted 25/28mm figures nicely.

Plano fishing tackle box?

They make different sizes also.

Michaels sold small floss/bead boxes that hold 3-4 28mm infantry figures in each section.

My local Walmart carries a "Large Utility Box" in the arts and crafts department that works quite well for my 28mm Bolt Action figs. You might need a few for the quantity of figures that you have; price is reasonable.

Michaels still sells the floss/bead boxes, used them for years but they are charing $5 USD a piece of late versus the $3 USD they were for years after rising from $2. USD Might be a bit short for 25/28 mm. I use them for 15 mm and mounted figures can sometimes be a challenge, same with standard bearers. There are smaller Sterlite boxes that might work better – just add some sort of divider.

I am switching over to the large clip box in the OP – which nicely fits the pre-cut felt sheets Michaels also sells along with Aileen's Tacky glue to keep the felt in place. Maybe stick with the same size box with the glued in felt and then make a wooden 'matrix' to fit inside to keep figures separated. I think Micheal's also sells the wood you need for this. Probably get all those figures in two or three such boxes, the command and artillery.

Those OP Sterlite boxes will fit a 15 mm giraffe standing tall!

Hi

I use box files with glued in strips of wooden beading. It takes a little planning but I've had no accidents. Of course you can't throw the boxes about or drop them.
I use higher lengths of beading for Cavalry.
And of course remove the restraining clips!

Hope this helps

It's off topic but pizza boxes work really well for storing Airfix figures.

For both Warhammer units and D&D figure sets, I use different Plano tackle boxes. The plastic is semi-transparent and I use a combination of internal dividers and foam inserts to immobilize the figures. Obviously you could use cotton wool or felt or tissue paper instead of foam.

The workhorse is the Plano 3610 which has 5 removable dividers; it is deep enough for 40mm/1.5" square bases but not 50mm/2". link

I use a lot of of the Plano Stowaway 3500 as well, which is slightly smaller; it has a mix of fixed and removable dividers; it is deep enough for 1" square bases and may work for your gunners:

For larger models I use a various other storage boxes that have similar footprint.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did a little digging and went with these from Amazon

DUOFIRE Plastic Organizer Container Storage Box 34 Grids

Cheaper if you buy the mutli-packs but cheap enough to keep single figure painted miniatures in.

I had no idea that I had so many sappers and gunners..I had to order 7 boxes…..

Another alternative would be our wall mounted display cases. You can display miniatures on the wall year round for all to see!
