Well it does seem like discussion has settled down. I am painting armies and reading…

I would still like to see an FPW board get a poll. If it does not come to pass, fans can agree on where to post on it, so we don't have to look through multiple boards.

Old Contemptible25 Nov 2022 12:30 a.m. PST

So are we doing this?

Lilian25 Nov 2022 10:37 a.m. PST

It seems to appear still unnecessary…same observation I did in the past given the lack of activity in the 19th Century boards multiplying empty-shells-boards, the Carlist Wars…3 threads in 2022…!? The Spanish-American War board with the impressive number of 11 in 2022
this thread of the FPW board has been opened the 27th august 2021 only 6 threads appears in this board after this date concerning 1870…the activity and interest in TMP is very far to justify a separate board…

Old Contemptible25 Nov 2022 11:28 p.m. PST

I agree but that has never stopped a new board before. I would at least like a vote on it.

I agree OC. I have already laid out my reasons why I think there is no comparison between this war and some of the others with boards. It is a dramatic, massive conflict between two major powers with lasting impact, new technology, lots of minis available and Bruce Weigles rules, scenarios and incredible battle boards for play and inspiration. I would use this board. I have no idea where I might look for like minded people in the current boards. I thought for a long time there would be a vote at some point.

Any war that features a huge high stakes cavalry charge known as "Von Bredow's Death Ride" deserves at least a vote on TMP!

Yes Please! Just saw this and would have voted earlier.

How about a "Mid Victorian" Board to encompass the Crimean War, Franco-Austrian War, 6 Weeks War and FPW??

You can add in the Russo-Turkish War as well.

Old Contemptible17 Aug 2023 5:31 p.m. PST

I think we already have that, the 19th Century board.

That description would probably encompass more than half the boards on TMP. Some I argued against having but it has gotten ridiculous. Do we have more of a need for a G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T., Carlist Wars, Meso-American, etc.? Have you seen the traffic on them? I opposed all of these on the bases of lack of interest. But we have them. So if we can have those we can definitely have a FPW board. I would guess there is more interest in the FPW than all those boards I mentioned combined.

Old Contemptible17 Aug 2023 5:53 p.m. PST

Where were all of you when we were discussing these other boards? Most of the time I was in a very small minority opposing them. I saw posts like "Sure why not' and "What harm would there be.."

Here is my latest FPW game.

Wow, great looking armies, OC!

I gave up on this a while ago despite there being no comparison between the FPW and some of the other boards for scope, scale, and all the other factors.

Rules from Neil Thomas to Bruce Weigle. Or Big Bloody Battles, maybe the best FPW specific sets. Although it can be used for other periods. If we had a board we could easily locate, we could debate this. Volley & Bayonet- the old reliable.I don't see rules like these, or lines of figures for the Carlist Wars. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough. Figs and scales to choose from.

BBB and 1870, in fact the Grand Tactical Rules series, are the best rules and references for this war and as far I can tell. 700 members on BBBs Facebook page, many would likely be FPW players.

But our pleas have not been answered OC. We don't really know who plays this period here.

Old Contemptible28 Aug 2023 4:19 p.m. PST

We enjoy playing "They Died For Glory" as I prefer battalions/regiments to brigades. Once you get to know the sequence of play, the game flows nicely. Well, I won't give up the fight we just need a better strategy. I don't know why there is so much hostility to gaming the period. There is a Swashbuckling board for heaven's sake.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP28 Aug 2023 8:33 p.m. PST

Exactly!

People are not familiar with the developments and events of the period for some reason. But then I don't know the Carlist Wars. I will have a look at They Died for Glory.

Here is a recent FPW game I put on for my club.

I would at least like a vote on it.

Can't be a vote until the discussion stops.

Field Marshal26 Oct 2023 5:00 p.m. PST

If Carlist wars has a board the FPW deserves one.

good counter example, maybe it is time to suppress some boards instead of multiply them and divide more TMP!

The discussion was over long before my latest post.

Tortorella, thanks for the kind words about BBB. Almost 1,000 members on the BBB io group now:
groups.io/g/bloodybigbattles
For anyone interested, you can find collected reviews of BBB on the BBBBlog here:

Searching the BBBBlog for "Franco-Prussian War", "1870" or "1871" will find you plenty of after-action reports etc. There are historical scenarios available for all 16 of the biggest battles of the war.

As for whether we want an FPW board on TMP: well, indeed, it obviously has a far better case than some boards that already exist. I don't see a great need for it myself, but you can be sure I'd post on it if it did get the vote.
