Because so little is known of her that it is difficult to do more than muse. I've seen writings indicating that she was Richard's one true love. Though I think "true" here is as much a caveat as anything else, and there is speculation they never even shared a bed, either before or during their marriage. I always had the impression that there was more to them than just politics, though that was certainly an element of their relationship. She was definitely not the castle milkmaid that he defied convention over, marrying for true love. Or maybe she was. Again, your musings. |

The Farce is strong in this one. And the software pretty similar it seems… Now get over IT! In case you didn't- I posted a "duplicate" on them so they should disappear. d |

Very cool! Though frankly, I'd have settled for a post or two that were on topic 😉 |

I think the marriage was organised by Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard's mother. After the marriage, Berengaria accompanied Richard on crusade, but whether this was for love, duty or piety, or possibly a mix? For what it's worth, she never remarried, but appears to have devoted herself to religious works, especially in Le Mans. She appears to have been a strong-willed woman. Unfortunately, very little is known about her (certainly in English, maybe there is more in Spanish)? The only dedicated history that I know of is Ann Trindade's "Berengaria : In Search of Richard the Lionheart's Queen", but I think that is sparse in any details. |

Pretty much my understanding. It's a shame there isn't more written about her, as she seems to have led a fascinating life. Held prisoner in Sicily, gone crusading, did a fund raiser for her husband while HE was in the pokey. A lot more than the typical medieval queen who did lots of embroidery. |

"I thought Richard was gay?" That certainly would have been no obstacle to him marrying. |
