How were these distributed during the war, were whole squads armed with one these weapons, or were they individually dispersed into squads with the riflemen, or some of both? Perhaps this was different as the war moved onward or was on a different front or with different units or a combination of these? |

I recommend taking a look at Gary Kennedy's excellent website for battalion organisations. These provide plenty of information on how weapons were distributed through the battalion. The allocations varied between the type of unit and time (but not by front). Machine pistols (MP44 etc.) were primarily issued to NCO's, so you would typically found one carried by a rifle squad leader, though in late war there would be also a second one issued. Also junior officers could end up issued with them. Assault rifles in late war Volksgrenadier organisations could be issued to special sturm squads, who would be fully armed with them. As for semi-automatic rifles, AFAIK they were produced in rather limited numbers. I cannot recall much details about how they were distributed, though I think at one point in the late war there was a somewhat questionable idea of issuing them to snipers (who at that point may have not have been ideally trained for the task). |

I believe that at least for the MP44 they were as much as possible distributed by squad – I think the G43 was issued to snipers and not sure about distribution to squads – the MP40 was a squad leader's weapon and also was used by AFV crews |

As noted, so Gary's info. Briefly, MP40 were section leader and vehicle crew weapons. G43 issued in tiny numbers to specific individuals. Later in the war the VG44 organisation had two platoons in each company designated as assault platoons, and whole sections were armed with MP44 or MP40. The company still had some proper sections with rifles and LMGs. |
