I like how you are making these seemingly hopeless and one sided battles playable with adjusted victory objectives.

Thanks, Stecal. It's a simple concept (and by no means an original one) – take the historical outcome as the 'par score' and judge players' success or failure according to whether they do better or worse than their historical counterparts. Some players particularly enjoy taking the part of the historically doomed side – eg, Napoleon III's army at Sedan in the Franco-Prussian War – and revel in seeing if they can lose less badly in that underdog role.

Of course there is a whole debate to be had about the legitimacy of specifying certain locations as objectives, and whether this then straitjackets players unduly into repeating the past. But it seems to work for most of the players I meet.
