Messages from Natal,

I thought I would share my experience in painting Zulus using Citadel Contrast Paints. They have enabled me, a rather slow painter, to finally take on the challenge of painting a Zulu Impi. Hope this info might help those of you like me who have always wanted to play this period but shied away.

I have also created Anglo-War Unit Cards for TMWWBKs and some Field Commander rules. They can be used flat or folded over and card sleeved to take up less table top.

Rusty Balls, excellent paint jobs. I too am a slow painter, glacially slow. I really like the look you achieved with those paints. I had to buy more Zulus as I ran out of steam. I think I will try these points based on your post.

I love the game cards! Any chance of getting a workable copy to work up some cards for the French in Tonkin. Outstanding blog, I'd like to sign up to follow but your blog doesn't have that enabled. Great work, keep posting and motivating.

Just a question…..what is the action focus and how does it work?
Thank you

Those cards are a nice idea very well executed.

I wanted to have an overall Field Commander but I didn't want them to "Commannd" the battlefield in the traditional sense of wargames. I wanted to keep the unit dynamics that are at the heart of TMWWBKs. These are small unit actions and I was looking more for the local impact of an Officer on a unit at a critical moment. What happens when they get stuck in.

So, I have created a very small command radius for them so that they have to be committed somewhere to make an impact and don't have reach across the table. Their placement and location matter.

Units within their command radius (4"), can use the Commander's Leadership value to test if they want to execute an order that is the current "Action Focus" of the Commander. in, other words, if they want to do what the Commander is currently focused on, he will help them but if they want to move and he is running around concerned with firing, he's not going to help them much. You can ether move him to a unit that needs help firing or you can try to change his "Action Focus".

I have posted my "Field Commander" rules on my Blog as well. They are still in development but I like the path that I am on.
