I'm making the XI Corps and was wondering if anyone had a reference for the 54th NY infantry? I see where they had black uniforms trimmed in silver. Has anyone else painted this unit?

How long did they wear this uniform? Was it just a black coat?

Sounds like an interesting unit and fit in with a lot of garish uniforms of the first 90-120 days.
I'm wondering when they made the official uniform change as I don't see the black uniforms being used for longer than six months…

In the journal – it talks about paying for Green Frock Coats in October – also talks about 1 embroidered regimental flag – no description and then later being presented with 4 other flags later in October

I have two sets of flags, one of which has the black flag with The silver skull. There was no description of the jacket. The 41st had a Prussian cut green trimmed red Jaeger jacket and Prussian marching boots and waist ammo boxes. No further description for the 54th other than black trimmed silver.

The following is from Frederick Phisterer, New York in the War of the Rebellion, Vol 1, (1912), p.116, describing the ten existing flags of the 54th NY in the New York State collection.

1. Silk flag. National, mounted upon original staff and in fair condition. Inscription, "54th New York Vols.", Spearhead broken.

2. Silk flag. National, in very bad condition, mounted upon staff, spearhead broken and part gone. No inscription.

3. Blue silk regimental banner, mounted upon original staff and in fair condition, spear-head broken. This banner has the arms of the city of New York painted upon it and also the inscription, "54th Regiment N. Y. Vols." and was presented by the city of New York.

4. Guidon, National, mounted upon original staff. No inscription.

5. 6. Blue silk guidons, mounted upon original staffs. Inscription, "54th New York Vols.".

7. 8. Fragments of blue silk guidons attached to staffs. No inscription.

9. 10. National guidons, bunting, mounted upon original staff and in fair condition. No inscription.
