Found this pretty interesting from a former Grunts POV as well as a wargamer …

I wonder if those scenes are on YouTube.

I don't believe we have any rules that give realistic firefights. Lots of rules for firefights, but none capture the sense I get from reading historical accounts of police and soldiers.

Sorry, 13 Hours does it for me as well as some of the scenes in Band of Brothers.

I thought all firefights where like this 80s classic

Ironicus Ruperticus, methinkus. Or was that just a moment of satire?

How about Hacksaw Ridge? Certainly captures a lot of the horrific gore that is the reality of war.

I don't know; that scene from "The Heat" is pretty ridiculous on a number of levels. So the police decide to engage the bad guys using automatic weapons in downtown LA???

dBerczerk30 Jul 2021 4:33 p.m. PST

What is the consensus on the final shootout from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" ?

Realistic? Those revolvers almost never ran low.

I agree about the opening scene of SPR. I saw it once, and that was enough. Now other combat scenes in the movie being realistic? Ehhhhh…

Well, "Heat" was a Michael Mann movie. That's all one had to say back in the 1990s. Two years later, we had the real life North Hollywood shootout. That was a sobering, scary moment.

As for gaming, I don't want my skirmish games to be *too* realistic. Either it would be boring with everyone holed up while shooting or over quickly. Decades ago, I remember Rick Priestley speaking about why 40K was designed to avoid these problems to give a good game instead of a simulation.

BTW I love the line in Appaloosa with Viggo and Ed Harris. After a shootout scene, Viggo says, "That was quick." Ed Harris replies, "Yeah, everybody could shoot." Says it all.

My coworker, who had been in a number of firefights overseas, said the opening scene of SPR was the one he always felt that be most realistic.

In defense of:
In BCatSDK, the beginning scene does show him reloading his 6-shooter. He reloads it real good!
Arnie doesn't have to reload. He keeps changing weapons.
So, I think that they are realistic…

The scene from the movie "The Odd Angry Shot" portraying Australian SASR in Vietnam. The patrol in the jungle is in contact with Viet Cong and the forward scout hit.

Cattle Dog thanks for finding me my next movie to watch

Cattle Dog31 Jul 2021 3:55 a.m. PST

14 Bore you are welcome.
Watched it on father's day back in the late 80's with my Day who served in New Guinea in WW2. He remarked that if the had that much beer that was available / consumed during the film then the war would have dragged on for a few more years. My cousin who served in Vietnam with 4 RAR stated that after returning from patrolling back to Nui Dat you could not consume more than one can "which would put you on your a--e".
Apart from the volumes of beer, the patrolling scenes were filmed at the Land Warfare Centre Canungra Queensland in the Border Ranges behind the Gold Coast. It was pretty well spot on for what we did 10 to 15 years later.

My dad was at Omaha on D-day. My brother in law took him to see Saving Private Ryan. My father was suffering from several health issues including impaired memory and inability to respond to his environment. But during those opening scenes my brother in law stated my dad was sitting up straight and as alert as he had seen him in ages. My dad made two comments. The first was that he could smell that day again. The second was the scene showing the water lapping on the beach. My dad, who lost a fair share of his unit that day, said the water wasnt red enough. Re watching the scene it couldnt have been redder. So yes, will vote Saving Private Ryan.

I always enjoyed the fighting scenes in the TV movie "An Ungentlemanly Act" about the invasion of the Falklands. I can't comment on how realistic they are as I wasn't there but they seem like a good representation of the attack on government house

I saw Private Ryan once and that was enough for me. I'm too squeamish to watch the blood and gore

BillyNM31 Jul 2021 11:05 p.m. PST

For realistic gunfights I strongly recommend watching ‘Dirty Little Billy'; shots miss, guns jam leaving the guy who brought a knife to a gunfight with the edge (yes it is meant to be a pun) and the final shootout is at point blank range.
Another firefight that sticks in my memory is in Dr Strangelove where the US Army is trying gain control of the base to recall the B-52s.

mildbill01 Aug 2021 7:08 a.m. PST

The Butch cassidy movie the director always made sure that in every scene nobody shot more than they could with their weapons without reloading. Then in the final scene he said f-it and for dramatic affect said to ignore it.

Looks like Spectre Miniautres really do their homework. The Tier 1 operators look just like agents in the Sicario gunfight.

QUATERMASS03 Apr 2022 3:35 p.m. PST

Never been in gun fight so no frame of reference.
What about
We were soldiers?

Wolfhag02 May 2022 7:27 p.m. PST

How about the OK Corral?

Sicario is good.

Google "police shootings" for the real thing.
