I'm downsizing my world these days. One of my most recent efforts was to sell off my 25mm SYW and buy two new armies in 10mm. So I have two questions:
1. does anyone else use 10mm? 6mm is just too small for me, but I don't see much online about 10mm. I do Napoleonics in 28 and 10mm already.

2. what rules sets are out there? I remember Konigs Kreig, and have played Warfare in the Age of Reason. Is there anything more recent?

I do not prefer Honours of War, sorry.

I fell in love with the Old Glory 10mm line for the ACW. 5 figures on a strip. I put 2 rows on a 1" base. My regiments, using "Shattered Union", are 6 bases or less. 60 figures look awesome! Get a brigade or two together and they start looking like those "American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War" maps.
They paint up rapidly. I only detail the front of the first rank and the rear of the back rank. I can paint 2 to 3 regiments in a day! Wargame quality, of course. Look great on the table, just don't get real close…
OG has a tempting 7 Years War line and with their $50 USD army builder option of 40% off, well, they're practically free!
I don't know if "Shattered Union" would work for this period, though. It's a 'dead' rules, so you can modify it as you please, which I have done. Better artillery rules.
The original "Shako" came with a 7YW supplement which we have played, in 15mm, and enjoyed.

I have some Pendrakken 10mm SYW, but my mate has a shedfull. They are a very good range, and the company is a joy to deal with.

As for rules, my choice would be King of the Battlefield. Simple enough to do a lots of historical battles on a 6 by 4 table, and finish them in an evening, but with some interesting mechanisms, especially as regards cavalry melees. But we've used the same figures for Maurice, and probably in future will try the SYW incarnation of "Twilight of the Sun King" – sorry, can't recall it's name just now.

What's this about OG 10mm $50.00 USD army builder? Do tell please. Or are you talking about the Old Glory Army membership? If so, I understand that. I was thinking they had some 10mm army deal.

Oops.

Thanks

John

I will recommend the Pendraken line. Excellent service here to the Southeast USA.

I never had the OG SYW, so I can't speak to them. I've owned other 10mm OG lines but sold them off a long time ago.

As for rules, I cut my gaming teeth using Warfare in the Age of Reason. It still holds a spot on my shelf. I just can't imagine myself playing it anymore either.

Probably the best bet for current, popular rules would be Black Powder (2nd Edition) from Warlord Games. You could also use the supplement "The Last Argument of Kings", which covers everything from 1700 to around the end of the SYW. That would be my first choice. It's a fun game.

Osprey also has their "Honours of War – Wargames Rules of the Seven Years War." It is a typical Osprey rulebook. I own it but haven't played it. Perhaps others can speak for it?

I have a ton of Pendraken 7YW figures.

These are from a few years ago. I have even more now.

I bought both lines of OG SYW in 10mm. I like the MM for Napoleonic, but I don't want to pay to ship across the pond. I may have to in order to get additional lines. Do Pendraken match up with OG?

I own and have tried to make Honours of War work for me, they don't.

Not a fan of BP sadly. I have been looking at "for king and empress" but I don't know if it had a robust enough following.

Pendragon minis are available thru Dark Horse Hobbies in Kansas darkhorsehobbies.com Steve encourages you to let him know what you want in the quantities you desire so he can ensure he has stocks on hand. I have ordered a ton of stuff from him and never had a problem. His shipping rates are reasonable, also. My Pendragon 10mm serve alongside Old Glory and my AIM line in my games. Any difference in figure sizes don't allow me to roll any better or worse!

You could buy all the Twilight rules from On Military Matters
including Twilight of the Soldier Kings (SYW). Nick (the author) has an active Facebook page. I was a playtester for the Twilight of the Soldier Kings, but have no monetary link to the rules.

Replaced my 6mm Heroics and Ros SYW armies a few years ago with Pendraken's 10mm (and a very few Magister Militum for de Trenck's Pandours), largely because the 6mm ones were unpopular with normal opponents. It was a good move, however; they look very good indeed, and as has been observed, Pendraken are a reliable and very friendly lot.

If I was to embark on 10mm SYW, I'd probably go with Old Glory 10mm and supplemented by Pendraken. The strips of figures really lend themselves to speed painting and getting very nice results. They also give the look of dense linear lines that is very aesthetically pleasing. I don't have their SYW range but the ECW and ACW ranges are very very good.

As for rules, I like For King or Empress and Maurice. Both very different rulesets but both are well thought out and give good games.

King of the Battlefield

It's fun. You get a result.
If you have the troops then 1000pts / 25 units a player works well with an evenings game. 40-50 units each if playing all day.

There have been a few TMP threads where it has been mentioned and praised.

Hi

I have been building SYW 10mm armies for years now, all figures Pendraken (good company to deal with as others have said). I think SYW plays best at 'battalion' level but still trying to find the rules that hit the 'sweet spot' for me. Currently using Black Powder with adaptions.
