I am curious if anyone knows what type of organization maintained assault gliders in the Luftwaffe. Although numerous aircraft were capable of towing a DFS 230, including a BF-109, gliders do not appear to be organic to the organization of any flieger units capable of towing them. Thanks.

Can't say, but I think Me-110s, and other twin-engine aircraft are more likely to be tow vehicles.

The 110 was included in the list, along with the HS-126, but to the best of my research, DFS-230s, ME-321s and GO-242s were not maintained in the units that could tow them.

The question is, if not in the units that could tow them, where?

Knowing the byzantine Nazi approach to beaurocracy and active encouragement of empire building, don't expect any sort of rational answer. Whoever they were, I'm sure they had special uniforms and their own Waffenfarbe.

Yes Rapier, the Segelflugzeugwart Luftgruppenleiter uniform was easy to find. Just nothing on the organizations themselves.

This uniform was rejected by Goering.

And not just towing units.

Early War: Luftlandung Geschwaders.

Mid-to-late transitional: VerbindungdKommando

Late War: Schleppgruppe. Three of them, with staffel organized by glider type.

All according to ww2.dk.

I found nothing on separate waffenfarbe so I am assuming they wore yellow with the rest of the fliegertruppen.

Interestingly enough, it appears they had various aircraft organically assigned to the glider unit as opposed to the other way around. Everything from Stukas to DO-17s to HE-111s, etc. They even had a short metal tow-bar that brought the nose of the DFS 230 to just a few feet behind the HE-111. Used in inclement weather apparently.

I imagine in their own separate Gruppen.
