Miscast.
Dicaprio needs to play Sigel.
Looks just like him

Jared Harris did a fair job doing Grant, tho I think he'd make a more convincing Sherman.

I think Bryan Cranston could do a compelling Grant.

Agree on Decaprio being miscast. He isn't a good idea for Grant.

Harris did an excellent job as Grant. And Bryan Cranston is also an excellent idea.

You know, even twenty years ago, a new Spielberg movie would have been exciting.

Assuming the meat of the film is going to focus on the war and the presidency, you'll need someone who can convincingly represent a man in his forties. Makeup can only do so much, and the "people looked older back then" argument doesn't carry as much weight when you have actual photos of the historical person. I'm a fan of Harris and Cranston, but at this point they'd be more suited for Grant's last days in New York.

The correct casting choice is Joel Edgerton. Fine actor, right age range, and he looks enough like Grant that they could be related.

What is more interesting about this is Hollywood's possble return to historical drama. After hits like ‘Last of the Mohicans' and ‘Gladiator', Films moved on to fantasy and sci fi.

With a new ‘Master and Commmander' possible and now this, it appears the media may be interested in returning to this genre,

How old is this story?

May of 2018…..

It mentions a "coming" movie that is already a year old.

Perris070703 Jul 2021 8:53 a.m. PST

In this movie Grant is a superhero who must save the earth from the plans of evil Confederate super villains who have a nefarious plan to spread slavery worldwide, probably through the use of some Haitian drug that turns people into zombies. So it really doesn't matter who plays him. I am actually surprised it's not a female actor portraying Grant…

Lucius03 Jul 2021 9:37 a.m. PST

Dicaprio is 46. He's also been pretty, umm, jowly for a while now – not exactly a Titanic pretty boy any longer.

I think he might pull off a more than passable Grant.

"Historical drama" or period piece? Many so called historical dramas take so many liberties with the facts that they might as well call themselves fantasies.

Wargamers are usually such an easy going bunch where films are concerned?

Wow, good job TMP, it took 9 posts before someone turned it into politics. Must be a record; what do we win?

USAFpilot03 Jul 2021 7:13 p.m. PST

I wish Hollywood could make a historical movie without the modern narrative of politics correctness shoved in your face.

I watch quite a few old Westerns on UK television. Of late, the continuity announcers have taken to warning that the films 'contain language which may offend' – presumably because the characters refer to 'Injuns', 'Redskins' and 'half-breeds'.

I can't help wondering how long it will be before similar warnings are given before war films because they include words like 'Hun', 'Jerry', 'Kraut' and so on.

Surely audiences can cope with such words in the context of films portraying periods in which such terms were commonly used?

All high school senors should watch the movie Blazing Saddles. It will help them identify bad guys for not paying attention in history classes.

What in the Wide World of Sports is youse a'goin on about?

I wonder if Milennials and Gen X'ers Google "Wide World of Sports" or just shrug it off.

Grant owned a slave, the movie has been "canceled".

I wish Hollywood could make a historical movie without the modern narrative of politics correctness shoved in your face.

Bit difficult to make a film about the Civil War without bringing in "political correctness" old boy.

The whole conflict can be summed up as "A group of Northern Liberals telling the South what to do." Or, alternatively, "A group of South Conservatives refuse to accept the result of an election that the Electoral College was designed to rig." (Yes, there are parallels.)

repaint17 Jul 2021 5:11 p.m. PST

alas… Spielberg is the very definition of the Hollywood problem and what culture has become.

Double G15 Aug 2021 4:57 p.m. PST

I'm pretty sure Dicaprio and Spielberg have more combined Oscars than those posting in this thread; the two of them will have to somehow muster the strength to carry on and learn to live with the disappointment knowing posters on a message board don't think much of them as actors and directors.

Gods speed to the two of them.

Blutarski16 Aug 2021 5:24 p.m. PST

At least they have you, Double G.
